U15 Sharks Chase Down 112 in Tense T20 Victory at Mortimer

Sonning U15 Sharks secured a hard-fought victory away at The Recreation Ground on 2nd July, chasing down Mortimer & West End's total of 111 for 8 with three wickets in hand in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West.

Mortimer captain Owen Jeffery won the toss and elected to bat, but his side struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Sonning bowling attack. Oscar Zaum was the standout performer with the ball early on, returning excellent figures of 2-4 from his two overs, removing Edward MacKenzie — caught by Neel Kumar — and then bowling Jeffery himself for just 2. Captain Neil Jasti set the tone from the opening over, conceding only 8 runs from his two overs while claiming the wicket of opener Olly Monkhouse, and bowling a maiden in the process.

Benjamin Peters also made a significant contribution with the ball, taking 2-7 from his two overs, including the key wickets of Rory Hunter, caught by Kishan Akula, and Caleb Peake, bowled for 8. Kishan Akula chipped in with 1-8 from two overs, dismissing Rory Timms for a duck. With Mortimer reduced to 84 for 8, the innings looked set to close well short of a competitive total, but Luke Brown struck a breezy unbeaten 16 from just 11 balls, including three fours, to push the score to 111 for 8. Samuel Chaimbault top-scored for the hosts with 18 off 20 balls, hitting two fours and a six, while Ewan Atherton contributed 11. The extras column proved costly for Sonning, with 36 extras conceded — including 20 wides — giving Mortimer a total that proved more challenging than it might have been.

The Sharks' reply began unsteadily. Aveer Sidhu was caught by Chaimbault off Rory Timms for just 1, and when Kishan Akula fell bowled by Jeffery for 15 — a brisk knock featuring three fours — Sonning were 18 for 2 and under early pressure. Jeffery was particularly miserly, returning figures of 1-4 from three overs with a maiden.

Shreyas Koppole steadied the innings with a composed 24 from 26 balls, lacing four boundaries as he added 36 for the third wicket with Toby Whitehead. Koppole's dismissal, bowled by Rory Hunter, brought Sonning to 54 for 3, still needing 58 more. Neil Jasti arrived at the crease and played a crucial cameo of 12 from just 7 deliveries, clearing the rope for six and striking a four to inject much-needed urgency, though he fell to Hunter with the score on 67.

The pivotal partnership of the chase came between Whitehead and Oscar Zaum, who added 32 for the fifth wicket. While Whitehead anchored proceedings with a patient 8 from 31 balls, Zaum counter-attacked superbly, striking 19 off 17 deliveries with two fours. Zaum's dismissal by Timms at 99 for 5 triggered a brief wobble — Whitehead was caught by Grevatte-Ball off Timms and Kumar departed for a duck in quick succession, leaving Sonning on 100 for 7 and suddenly in a precarious position.

Aravindth Satheeskumar kept his composure to see Sonning home, finishing unbeaten on 8 from 8 balls with two boundaries as the Sharks reached 113 for 7 to complete the victory. Rory Timms was the pick of the Mortimer bowlers with 3-27 from five overs, but his efforts ultimately went unrewarded as Sonning's collective batting depth proved too strong on the night.
