Match Report
Scorchers Fall Short as Extras Prove Costly in Defeat at Edgbarrow
Sonning U15 Scorchers posted a commendable 173 for 5 from their 20 overs at Edgbarrow School but were unable to defend the total as Crowthorne & Crown Wood's U15 Crocodiles chased it down with seven balls to spare, aided by a staggering 51 extras conceded by the Sonning bowling attack.
Asked to bat first after Crowthorne won the toss and elected to field, the Scorchers lost captain Kishan Akula to a run out in the early overs with the score on 17. What followed was a blistering innings from Neil Jasti, who dominated the Crowthorne bowling from the moment he walked to the crease. Jasti struck six sixes and two fours in a magnificent 55 from just 28 balls before retiring not out, providing the platform the Scorchers needed.
Shreyas Koppole played an excellent supporting role, adding 46 for the second wicket with Jasti before falling caught off Nathan Maharaj for 29, an innings that included five fours and a six from 23 deliveries. The middle overs belonged to Edward Jones and Jasti, who combined for an 83-run third-wicket stand that shifted the momentum firmly in Sonning's favour. Jones contributed 28 from 34 balls, finding the boundary six times before being bowled by Aarav Gupta.
Ishan Jithendriya kept the scoreboard ticking with a well-struck 22 featuring four fours, and Jack Durrant's unbeaten 11 from eight balls ensured the Scorchers finished strongly. Maharaj was the pick of the Crowthorne bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 28 from his three overs, including a maiden, while Gupta chipped in with 1 for 8 from two overs.
The Scorchers' bowlers struck early in the reply when Arnav Duvvuri bowled Aarav Gupta with the score on just 9. Duvvuri was comfortably Sonning's most effective bowler, finishing with outstanding figures of 2 for 17 from three overs, clean and economical throughout. He added the wicket of Noah Darby, well caught by Jack Durrant, to leave Crowthorne 43 for 2.
Durrant himself delivered a disciplined spell of 1 for 13 from three overs, bowling Nathan Elliot, while captain Akula claimed the wicket of Tav Nair, caught by Neel Kumar, to reduce the hosts to 71 for 4. At that stage, the Scorchers appeared firmly in control of the contest.
However, Nathan Maharaj proved as dangerous with the bat as he had been with the ball, striking 52 from 42 deliveries with five fours and two sixes before retiring not out. The decisive intervention came from Crowthorne captain Will Taylor, whose unbeaten 43 from just 22 balls, peppered with nine fours, turned the match emphatically in the hosts' favour. The damage was compounded by the Scorchers' extras column — 35 wides and 10 no-balls gifted Crowthorne 51 runs without requiring a shot, effectively handing the opposition more than a quarter of their total. Henry Johnson conceded 14 wides in his three overs, Edward Jones leaked 11 wides from a single over, and Ishan Jithendriya's two overs included seven wides and four no-balls.
It was a match that the Scorchers will feel slipped away from them. Having posted a strong total built on Jasti's pyrotechnics and solid contributions throughout the order, the bowling unit's inability to control its line and length under pressure allowed Crowthorne to overhaul the target at 175 for 4 in 18.5 overs, securing a victory that owed as much to Sonning's generosity as it did to the hosts' batting prowess.
