Match Report

Sonning Women Fall Short Despite Spirited Chase at Emmbrook

Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered a narrow defeat to Emmbrook & Bearwood in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture on 1st June, losing by six runs in a competitive encounter at Emmbrook and Bearwood CC despite surpassing the hosts' run tally.

Captain Katie Barrows won the toss and opted to field first, and the decision appeared sound as Sonning's bowlers made early inroads. Geethika Jyothis was the standout performer with the ball, returning exceptional figures of 1-4 from her three overs to apply real pressure through the middle of the innings. Chloe Bailey also contributed well, picking up a wicket in her four-over spell, while Barrows herself claimed a scalp in her two overs, albeit at a cost of 13 runs.

The hosts' batting was built on contributions from the lower order. Deepa Ravi top-scored with 13 off 13 balls, while Lucy Prismall added 12 from her 13 deliveries and Nicci De Bromhead struck a handy 11 off just 11 balls. The upper order largely struggled against Sonning's varied attack, with openers Hollie Culham and Tina Lucas managing only 6 and 7 respectively. A hefty extras tally of 25 — including 16 wides and 6 no-balls — proved costly for Sonning, inflating Emmbrook's total to 81-3 from their 16 overs.

In reply, Sonning made an encouraging start through Chloe Bailey, who carried her bowling form into her batting, striking 12 off 11 balls at the top of the order. Geethika Jyothis continued her impressive all-round display with 11 from 13 deliveries, though she was dismissed twice in the pairs format, which proved damaging to Sonning's cause.

Sophie Parker played the innings of the match, top-scoring for Sonning with an assured 18 off 15 balls to anchor the middle overs. Rita Green also batted with purpose lower down, contributing 13 from 14 balls, while Anneli Page chipped in with a useful 9 off 12 deliveries.

However, Lucy Prismall proved equally dangerous with the ball as she had with the bat, claiming three wickets in her three overs for just 14 runs to swing momentum firmly in the hosts' favour. Deepa Ravi supported well with 2-6 from two overs, while Nicci De Bromhead added a further wicket. The six dismissals — each carrying a five-run penalty in the pairs format — ultimately proved the difference, as Sonning's actual run tally of 87-6 was not enough to overcome the scoring deductions.

Despite several promising individual performances, particularly from Parker, Bailey, and the outstanding Jyothis with both bat and ball, Sonning were unable to convert their efforts into a victory, collecting just one league point to Emmbrook's six in what was a frustrating afternoon for Barrows and her side.
