Sonning Women Secure Comfortable Victory at Binfield in Pairs Format

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a convincing win away at Binfield in the Super 8 Development Group 2, successfully defending after restricting the hosts to 82 for 6 and then chasing down the target without losing a single wicket in this pairs format encounter.

Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that proved shrewd as Sonning's bowlers kept Binfield largely in check despite a brisk start from opener Lisa Jones. Jones was the standout performer for the home side, striking 29 off just 19 balls with three boundaries to give Binfield early momentum at the top of the order. Rajbir Noble added a useful 12 from 14 deliveries, including two fours, but beyond those two contributions, the Binfield batting order struggled to build any sustained pressure.

Sonning used seven bowlers during the Binfield innings, spreading the workload across the squad. Grace Phillips made an early breakthrough, claiming the only bowling wicket of the innings with figures of 1 for 12 from her 1.5 overs. Frances Howson was impressively economical, conceding just 8 runs from her three overs, while Melissa Pengraeve was even more miserly, giving away a single run from her one over. Chloe Bailey also demonstrated control, bowling a maiden in her three-over spell that yielded just 11 runs.

Extras played a significant role in the Binfield total, with 31 additional runs — including 18 wides and 12 no-balls — padding the scoreboard. Katie Barrows proved particularly costly in that department, with six wides and six no-balls contributing to her 18 runs conceded from two overs.

In reply, Sonning's openers set the tone immediately. Siobhan Davis struck a fluent 14 from 11 balls, dispatching two boundaries as she and Chloe Bailey put together a positive opening partnership. Bailey was equally assured, contributing 12 from 13 deliveries with two fours of her own. The pair's enterprise at the top ensured Sonning were well ahead of the required rate from the outset.

Melissa Pengraeve added a steady 9 from 17 balls in the middle order to keep the scoreboard ticking. Although some of the lower-order batters found runs harder to come by — Elinor Longridge managed 19 dot balls without scoring — the crucial factor was that Sonning lost no wickets throughout the entire innings. The 30 extras conceded by Binfield's bowlers, including 16 wides and 10 no-balls, proved a generous supplement to the Sonning total.

Binfield's bowlers toiled without reward across their 16 overs, with captain Manisha Naik the most disciplined, conceding just 6 runs from her four overs. However, Rajbir Noble and Jo Hammond were both expensive, going for 27 and 21 respectively from their full allocations, and neither could find a way through. Sonning's unbeaten reply of 68 for 0, combined with fewer dismissal penalties, saw them comfortably home to collect six league points and leave Binfield with just one.
