Sabres Fall Short Despite Baloch and Maddi Heroics as Falkland Chase Down 134

Sonning U13 Sabres posted a competitive 133 for 9 from their 20 overs at Knowl Hill after Falkland won the toss and elected to field, but the visitors chased down the target with four wickets and eleven balls to spare in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture.

Captain Izaan Baloch produced a commanding knock of 40 not out from just 25 deliveries, striking eight boundaries in an innings of real authority. Equally impressive was opener Tejus Maddi, who carried his bat for an unbeaten 34 off 32 balls, an innings laced with five fours and a six. The pair were the backbone of the Sabres' total, though they were largely separated by the batting order and unable to build a partnership together.

The early overs proved difficult for Sonning, with Finley Andrews falling bowled to Alex Crosse for 5 and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari run out for just 1, leaving the Sabres 24 for 2. Advay Sood endured a frustrating stay at the crease, managing no runs from 10 balls before being bowled by Olly Paphitis-Wall. It was Baloch's arrival that transformed the innings, and a partnership of 31 for the third wicket steadied the ship before the skipper and the middle order pushed the score along briskly.

Sashreek Beesarla provided valuable late impetus with a fluent 20 off 19 balls, including four boundaries, adding 28 for the sixth wicket with Divik Gupta. However, Falkland captain Teddy Clayton tightened the screw with figures of 2 for 12 from three overs, including a maiden, while Alex Crosse claimed 2 for 11 from his three overs. A late collapse saw three wickets fall at 119, and the innings closed on 133 for 9 with 30 extras contributing to the total.

Baloch continued his outstanding individual performance with the ball, producing a superb spell of 2-0-5-3 that ripped through the top of Falkland's order. He bowled Finley Johnson and Olly Paphitis-Wall before having captain Clayton caught by Leo Ribbens for 9, reducing the visitors to 25 for 3. Utkarsh Sinha added a fourth wicket when he bowled Aayansh Kumar for 14, and at 40 for 4, Sonning appeared to have the upper hand.

The match turned decisively through a composed fifth-wicket partnership of 45 between Krithik Manthena and J Sanford. Manthena anchored the chase with a patient 27 from 30 balls before being run out by Finley Andrews, while Sanford contributed 17 from 32 deliveries. Their stand moved Falkland from a precarious position to within touching distance of the target. Advay Sood broke through to bowl Sanford, but by then the damage had been done with the score on 125 for 6.

Alex Crosse ensured there would be no late twist, striking an unbeaten 17 from just 10 balls with three fours to see Falkland home. The Sabres were hampered by 39 extras conceded in the second innings, including 23 wides and 6 no-balls, which ultimately proved the difference in a match where discipline with the ball slipped at crucial moments. Despite the defeat, Baloch's all-round display of 40 not out and 3 for 5 was a standout individual performance that deserved to be on the winning side.
