Stingers Fall Short as Finchampstead Claim Victory at King George's Field
Sonning U11 Stingers suffered a defeat at home to Finchampstead in the BYCL Girls U11 Challenge on Sunday, falling 21 runs short in their chase of 120 at King George's Field. Having won the toss and opted to field first, captain Isabella Partridge's side were unable to contain a free-scoring Finchampstead batting line-up before struggling to build momentum with the bat themselves.
Finchampstead posted 120 for 5 from their 16 overs, with Amira Amira providing the standout contribution with an attacking 22 from just 11 balls, including four boundaries. Opener Lexi-Rae Teague added 16 off 26 deliveries at the top of the order, while useful contributions from Annabel Hillan (8 off 6), Suchi Rao (8 off 12), Viha Shah (7 off 12) and Saran Brar (7 off 12) ensured runs came from throughout the batting card. Extras proved significant, with 78 added to the Finchampstead total including 28 wides and 30 in penalty runs.
The Stingers' bowling effort was not without its highlights. Chloe Dawes was the pick of the attack, claiming three wickets from her three overs for 18 runs — comfortably the best figures of the innings. Jessica Hawkins chipped in with one wicket from her three overs, while Ruby Cross also picked up a scalp, though her two overs proved expensive at 25 runs. Mia Ho was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding just eight runs from her two overs, though she went wicketless.
The Stingers' reply of 99 for 6 never quite gathered the necessary tempo. Openers Megan Symes (2 off 16) and Ruby Cross (0 off 8) found it difficult to score freely in the early overs, and with both falling to dismissals, the innings was soon under pressure. Finchampstead captain Anoushka Toley bowled with impressive control, sending down three overs for just five runs including a maiden, while Saran Brar's three overs yielded only six runs and a wicket with a maiden of her own.
Partridge provided the innings' top score with a battling 11 from 31 balls, finding the boundary twice and showing commendable determination. Jessica Hawkins offered brief resistance lower down the order with five runs including a four, but no other Sonning batter was able to build a substantial innings. Chloe Dawes, who had been so impressive with the ball, was dismissed twice in managing just one run from four deliveries.
Amira Amira underlined an outstanding all-round display for Finchampstead by claiming two wickets with the ball to add to her 22 with the bat. Both sides struggled with extras — Sonning's innings featured 102 in extras including 38 wides and 24 no-balls from the Finchampstead attack — but the visitors were more disciplined when it mattered most. Lexi-Rae Teague and Suchi Rao each took a wicket as the Finchampstead bowlers shared the spoils effectively.
Despite the result, there were encouraging signs for the Stingers, particularly Dawes's three-wicket haul and Partridge's composed innings with the bat. The team will need to convert starts into bigger scores and reduce extras in the field to compete in future fixtures in the Central division.
