Sonning Second XI Fall 37 Short as Bukhari Burst Ends Braywood Chase

Sonning CC's 2nd XI were beaten by 36 runs at The Turnbull Cricket Ground on Saturday, a promising chase unravelling in the closing overs as Braywood's lower-order bowlers picked off the visitors' middle and tail to seal a comfortable win in Division 4B of the Thames Valley Cricket League.

Braywood captain Zeeshan Chaudhry won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. The hosts made 177 for 9 from 36 overs before declaring their innings closed, a total that always looked competitive on a surface offering the bowlers something and one that would demand patience as well as intent from Sonning's top order.

The reply began encouragingly. Jacob Fitton and Gaurav Jayan put on 27 for the first wicket before Jayan, who had struck two boundaries in his 14 from 20 balls, was bowled by Uzairuddin Mohammed. That brought David Coutts to the crease and the pair then produced the innings' most fluent passage, adding 42 for the second wicket. Coutts was the aggressor, striking five fours in a 38-ball 25 that pushed the required rate back within reach before Saksham Singh bowled him with the score on 69.

Fitton's was the anchoring role. He faced 55 balls for his 25, hitting four boundaries and refusing to be hurried, but he too fell to Singh with the total at 84. Kavya Panchal, keeping wicket in this match, then carried the innings forward with the top score of 26 from 42 deliveries, including four fours, and Sonning reached 96 for 4 in reasonable order despite Neil Jasti being bowled by Singh without scoring.

Panchal added 21 for the fifth wicket with Kishan Akula before falling caught off Mohsin Bukhari at 117, and that dismissal proved the decisive moment. Bukhari, introduced late, tore through what remained. Akula, who had battled for 24 balls in making five, was caught off him one run later, and Braywood's grip tightened with every over.

Captain Duncan Parr made a brisk five before being caught behind by Chaudhry off Muhammad Salman, and Jameel Ahamed threatened briefly with two boundaries in an eight-ball cameo before Bukhari held a return catch off his own bowling. Ghulam Abbas was trapped lbw by Bukhari for four, and when Salman bowled Ethan Towner, Sonning were all out for 141 in 35.2 overs, having lost their last five wickets for 24 runs.

Bukhari finished with remarkable figures of 4 for 18 from four overs, while Singh's nine-over spell brought 3 for 30 and Salman claimed 2 for 11. Hussain Imran Hayder and Danish Ali were both wicketless but exerted the pressure that made those breakthroughs possible, Hayder conceding just 11 runs in six overs with two maidens and Ali sending down nine overs for 31. Sonning's own cause was helped considerably by 28 extras, including 23 wides, but the discipline of Braywood's attack in the final third of the innings ultimately settled it.

The result earned Braywood 22 points, with Sonning taking eight bonus points — three for batting and five for bowling — from a contest in which four of their top seven reached the twenties without any one of them going on to make the innings-defining score the chase required.
