Sonning 2nd XI Fall Short as Slough Chase Down 167 with Five Wickets in Hand

Sonning 2nd XI suffered a disappointing defeat at King George's Field on Saturday as Slough's 4th XI successfully chased down 167 in their Division 5B encounter, reaching the target in just 31 overs with five wickets still intact.

Captain Robert Mosley won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared a decent surface, promoting himself to open the innings. Mosley made a brisk 22 from 42 balls, including a six and two fours, putting on 22 for the first wicket before Dan Anderson departed for 2, caught off the bowling of Jaspreet Singh. The innings quickly wobbled as Robert Jones was trapped lbw by Muhammad Sohail Zafar for a duck, leaving Sonning 29 for 2. Mosley himself was run out shortly after, and at 55 for 3 the hosts were in need of a significant partnership.

Rahul Sood and Jameel Ahamed provided exactly that, putting on 59 for the fourth wicket in an entertaining stand that breathed life into the Sonning innings. Sood was the more aggressive of the pair, striking four fours and two sixes in a fluent 34 from just 31 deliveries, while Ahamed contributed a composed 19 from 26 balls with three boundaries. Their partnership took Sonning past the 100 mark and offered the platform for a competitive total.

However, the introduction of Amandeep Singh proved decisive. The Slough all-rounder produced a devastating spell of 5 for 33 from 8.5 overs, dismantling the middle and lower order. Once Ahamed fell bowled by skipper Nitesh Seth at 114 for 4, wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Sood was bowled by Amandeep Singh, Kavya Panchal lasted only nine balls, and Raoul Harding — who had battled for 19 from 37 deliveries — departed in quick succession, leaving Sonning reeling at 140 for 7.

John Rimmer and Hatib Khan added a useful 23 for the eighth wicket, Rimmer making 16 and Khan a punchy 18 from 16 balls, but Seth returned to remove Khan and Amandeep Singh cleaned up Ethan Towner to wrap up the innings for 166 in 35.5 overs. The 29 extras, including 18 byes, flattered what was a below-par batting display.

Sonning's bowlers made an early breakthrough when Rimmer had Prabesh Bhandari caught by Sood for 8 with the score on just 8. Hatib Khan was economical in his opening spell, conceding only 10 runs from five overs with two maidens, and Jack Wolfenden accounted for Fiza Nausheen Asif Iqbal, caught behind by Panchal for 10, to leave Slough 35 for 2.

From there, however, Ankush Sharma and Vinny Kapoor steadied the ship with a partnership of 42 for the third wicket. Kapoor made a composed 20 before being caught by Dan Anderson off Ahamed's bowling, but Sharma remained immovable throughout, compiling an unbeaten 57 from 67 balls with eight fours. The match-winning contribution came from Parashurama Raykar, who blazed 45 from just 28 deliveries, crashing eight fours and a six in a devastating fourth-wicket stand of 66 with Sharma that effectively settled the contest. Ethan Towner removed both Raykar and Amandeep Singh in quick succession, but by then the damage was done, and Slough coasted home in the 31st over.

The defeat leaves Sonning's 2nd XI with only seven bonus points to show for their efforts, while Slough collected the full 22 match points. Mosley's side will need to find greater consistency with the bat and more penetration with the ball if they are to compete in the second half of the Division 5B season.
