Match Report

Eagles Fall Short as Slough Prove Too Strong at Home

Sonning U9 Eagles travelled to Slough CC Ground 1 on 16 July for a U9 Super 8s East league fixture and, having won the toss and elected to bat, were unable to post a total large enough to prevent the hosts from claiming victory. Slough's U9 Lions chased down the Eagles' 85 for 5 with relative comfort, reaching 97 for 4 from their 16 overs to secure the 20 league points on offer.

The Eagles' first innings was characterised by a frustrating lack of fluency at the top of the order. Jonathan Turner opened and showed some patience in compiling 5 from 16 balls, while Ranbir Setia (3 off 9) and Seve Horton (2 off 11) both struggled to find the boundary. Captain Oliver Baker could manage only a single from his 13 deliveries, and the innings appeared to be drifting.

It was Arjun Chirunamala who provided the most significant contribution with the bat, striking 11 from just 13 balls including two well-timed fours — the highest individual score for Sonning. Rishi Gundala offered useful support lower down with 9 off 16 deliveries, finding the rope once, while Elijah Patterson chipped in with 5. The Eagles' total of 85 was boosted considerably by 47 extras, with 33 wides from the Slough attack proving particularly generous.

In response, Slough captain Faaris Ahmed led from the front with an impressive knock of 21 from 26 balls, the standout innings of the match. Ahmed struck two fours and a six, providing the foundation his side needed. Sai Achpal (10 off 25, two fours) and Zain Ahmad (10 off 24) both contributed steadily, while Arjun Valsangkar added 9 from 22 balls despite being dismissed three times during his stay.

The Eagles' bowlers toiled gamely but were let down by their discipline. Extras once again dominated proceedings, with 32 wides and 14 no-balls swelling the Slough total by 47 runs — effectively matching the runs conceded in extras during their own batting innings. The Eagles' attack leaked runs across the board, with Elijah Patterson's two overs proving particularly expensive at 20 runs, and Oliver Baker conceding 17 from his two overs including 11 wides.

Ranbir Setia was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, claiming the only two wickets to fall from Sonning bowlers in his three-over spell for 15 runs. Rudra Dagar delivered the most economical spell of the innings, conceding just 2 runs from his single over without a wide or no-ball — a disciplined effort that showed what was possible. Jonathan Turner was also tidy, keeping things tight with 9 runs from three overs.

Despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs for the Eagles. Chirunamala showed real intent with the bat, and Setia's two wickets demonstrated that Sonning have bowlers capable of taking wickets in this format. Tighter extras from the bowling unit would have made this a far closer contest, with the 46 runs conceded in wides and no-balls ultimately proving the difference between the two sides.
