Spartans Chase Down Sabres in Entertaining Intra-Club Friendly at Knowl Hill

Sonning CC's U11 Spartans secured a deserved victory over their clubmates the U11 Sabres in a friendly pairs match at Knowl Hill CC on Monday evening, chasing down 88 with seven runs to spare to finish on 95 for 7 from their 16 overs.

The Sabres, having won the toss and elected to bat, found early runs difficult to come by against a disciplined opening spell from Spartans captain Vivaan Ramesh. Ramesh was the pick of the bowling attack, returning outstanding figures of 2 for 5 from his two overs, applying sustained pressure at the top of the innings. Zain Baloch provided excellent support with 1 for 9 from two overs, while Jacob Garner and Aarav Channapatna also chipped in with a wicket apiece.

For the Sabres, Jonathan Turner top-scored with 15 off 15 balls, including a boundary, providing the most substantial contribution to the innings. Ridith Kandadi was the most fluent of the Sabres batters, striking two fours in a brisk 13 from just 10 deliveries, while opener Lewis Towner contributed 8 from 14 balls. Extras, however, proved a significant factor, with 37 added to the Sabres total — 28 of which came through wides — helping to inflate the score beyond what the batters alone achieved.

The Spartans' reply got off to a blistering start thanks to Ramesh, who carried his fine bowling form into the batting innings. Opening the run chase, Ramesh smashed 22 off just 10 balls, cracking four boundaries in a commanding display that immediately put the Spartans on the front foot and took the sting out of the target.

Wicketkeeper Aryaansh Rawat continued the momentum with 15 off 14 balls, including a four, providing the second-highest individual score of the Spartans innings. Zain Baloch weighed in with a handy 10 from 9 deliveries, while Jessica Hawkins showed patience with 8 off 15 balls to help keep the scoreboard ticking over through the middle overs.

The Sabres bowlers fought hard in reply, with Jonathan Turner the standout performer, claiming 3 for 12 from his three overs to give his side hope of defending the total. Ridith Kandadi also took a wicket, though he proved expensive at 25 runs from three overs. Despite Turner's best efforts, the Spartans' top-order scoring had built a platform that proved too strong to overcome.

With 24 extras supplementing 71 runs from the bat, the Spartans reached 95 for 7 from their 16 overs, surpassing the Sabres' total of 88 to claim a well-earned victory. Ramesh's all-round performance of 2 for 5 with the ball and 22 with the bat was the decisive contribution in what proved a fine evening of junior cricket between two sides from the same club.
