Match Report

Sonning Sunday As Fall Short as Niranjan's Magnificent 90 Steers BBC Caversham to Victory

Sonning Sunday As posted a commanding 231 for 6 from their 40 overs at the Recreation Ground, but BBC Caversham chased down the target with three overs to spare, reaching 234 for 7 in a friendly fixture that slipped away from the visitors in the second half of the run chase.

Having been inserted after BBC Caversham won the toss and elected to field, Sonning made an assured start through openers Dan Anderson and Dhruv Peshkar. The pair put on 54 for the first wicket before Anderson was bowled by Mohammad Fahad for 16. Peshkar continued to bat fluently, striking seven fours in his 54 from 61 balls before being stumped by wicketkeeper S Townend off the spin of Jazinder with the score on 103.

Bharat Rathod anchored the middle overs superbly, compiling the innings' top score of 63 from 77 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries. His partnership of 75 with captain William Travers for the third wicket was the backbone of the Sonning innings, carrying the total from 103 to 178. Travers contributed a well-constructed 29 from 43 balls before being bowled by Wagh, while Vamsi Jasti fell for a first-ball duck in the same over to S Rawat, leaving Sonning at 178 for 4.

The late fireworks came from Asad Imam, who blazed a remarkable 35 from just 13 balls, clearing the boundary four times and adding two fours in a breathtaking cameo. His 34-run stand with Travers for the fifth wicket, followed by his aggressive hitting, propelled Sonning past 230. Imam was eventually caught by Jazinder off S Surakanthi, but the damage had been done. Neil Jasti chipped in with an unbeaten 8 from six balls as the visitors finished on a competitive total, with 26 extras including 17 wides highlighting some wayward bowling from the home attack.

BBC Caversham's reply began disastrously. Imam, switching from the pyrotechnics with the bat to the new ball, struck with the first delivery of the innings, trapping Ratesh Singh lbw for a golden duck. He then had S Verma caught by Anderson for 4, and when Christopher Dowse removed S Surakanthi for 17 — caught behind by Peshkar — the hosts were wobbling at 28 for 3. R Chhugani added only 10 before becoming Imam's third victim, caught again by Anderson, and at 34 for 4 the game appeared firmly in Sonning's grasp.

What followed was a match-defining partnership. S Niranjan and S Rawat combined for a stunning stand of 120 for the fifth wicket that utterly transformed the contest. Niranjan played the innings of the day, striking 14 fours in his commanding 90, while Rawat provided powerful support with 47, including three fours and two sixes. The pair dismantled the Sonning bowling attack with increasing authority, and by the time Anderson had Rawat caught by Imam with the score on 154, the required rate had become entirely manageable.

Anderson eventually claimed Niranjan's prized wicket — caught by Neil Jasti for 90 — and also removed Richard Salmon for 17 to finish with impressive figures of 3 for 43 from his eight overs, matching Imam's three-wicket haul. But Jazinder (19 not out) and T Castle (16 not out) saw the hosts home with relative comfort, the unbroken eighth-wicket partnership ensuring BBC Caversham reached their target in the 37th over. Despite strong individual performances with the bat and early breakthroughs with the ball, Sonning were left to rue that devastating fifth-wicket partnership that proved the decisive moment of the match.
