Match Report

Spartans Fall Short as Marlow Chase Down 110 in U11 League Clash

Sonning U11 Spartans posted 109 for 8 from their 20 overs but were unable to defend the total as Marlow chased down the target to reach 125 for 7, securing victory in this BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North East fixture on 22 June.

After Marlow won the toss and elected to field, the Spartans' innings got off to a steady if unspectacular start. Shaurya Gore made 5 from 9 balls at the top of the order before being dismissed, while Svarup Huggi provided some early substance with 15 off 22 deliveries, including a boundary. Edward Heath contributed 6 and Isaac Hutchinson added 7 as the middle order ticked along without truly accelerating.

The standout batting performance for Sonning came from Jessica Hawkins, who top-scored with an enterprising 18 off just 16 balls, striking three fours in an innings that gave the total a much-needed lift in the latter stages. Oliver Baker matched Huggi's tally of 15 runs from 21 balls, finding the boundary twice, though he was dismissed on two occasions in the pairs format. The Spartans' total was significantly boosted by 46 extras, including 20 no-balls and 17 wides, as the Marlow bowlers struggled at times with their discipline. Captain Wolfe Malone was the pick of the Marlow attack, claiming 2 wickets for 10 runs from his three overs, while Finn Wales bowled tidily with figures of 3-1-10-1, including a maiden.

In reply, Marlow's batters spread the scoring effectively across the order. Finn Wales led from the front with 15 off 16 balls at the top, hitting three fours, while Jack Dow matched that tally with 15 from 14 deliveries, also finding the boundary three times in the middle order. Digby Conan weighed in with a brisk 11 off 10 balls featuring two fours, and Eddie Hendry added a useful 9, ensuring that the required rate was never out of reach.

Sonning's bowling highlight came from Shaurya Gore, who produced an outstanding spell of 3 wickets for just 5 runs from his three overs — comfortably the best figures of the match. Jasper Hawkins was similarly miserly, conceding only 8 runs from three overs while bowling two maidens, though he could not find a breakthrough. At the other end, however, the Spartans leaked runs through extras, with 50 in total conceded during Marlow's innings, including 26 no-balls and 13 wides. Hugo King's two overs proved particularly costly, going for 27 runs including 8 no-balls.

The difference between the two sides ultimately came down to extras and consistency with the ball. While Gore's spell threatened to drag Sonning back into the contest, too many loose deliveries from the other end allowed Marlow to accumulate freely. The visitors' batters showed composure when it mattered, and their total of 125 was enough to see them home comfortably.

Despite the defeat, the Spartans can take encouragement from the batting contributions of Jessica Hawkins, Oliver Baker and Svarup Huggi, as well as Gore's exceptional bowling figures. Tightening up the extras column will be the key area for captain Zain Baloch and his side to address as the league campaign continues.
