Match Report

Eagles Soar to Convincing Victory at The Brakespear Ground

Sonning U9 Eagles produced an impressive all-round display to defeat Henley Under 9 Pumas by 36 runs in their BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture at The Brakespear Ground on 16th June 2024. After being asked to bat first following Henley's decision to field at the toss, the Eagles posted a commanding 108 for 2 from their 16 overs before restricting the hosts to just 72 for 4 in reply.

Oscar Williams was the standout performer with the bat, striking an excellent 21 from just 13 balls, an innings laced with three boundaries that provided real impetus to the Sonning total. Williams batted with authority and found the gaps with regularity, proving the most destructive batsman on show during the entire match.

Jonathan Turner provided valuable contributions further down the order, compiling 15 runs from 16 deliveries with three fours of his own. Vivaan Ramesh chipped in with a brisk 11 off 11 balls, including two boundaries, while Ranbir Setia added a useful 8 from 12 balls. The middle and lower order's willingness to play positively ensured the Eagles built a total well beyond Henley's reach.

Extras played a notable role in the first innings, with 36 additional runs finding their way onto the scoreboard. Henley's bowlers struggled for consistency, with Oliver Brindle conceding 23 runs from his two overs, including 10 wides, while Alfie Harrison and Advik Vinoth each went for 16. Jack South was the only Henley bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with 1 for 14.

The Eagles' bowling attack then set about dismantling Henley's chase with disciplined spells across the board. Vivaan Ramesh was outstanding with the ball, returning remarkable figures of 2-1-1-1, including a maiden over, conceding just a single run while claiming a crucial wicket. It was a spell that epitomised control and composure well beyond his years.

Oscar Williams continued his fine match with the ball, taking 1 for 4 from his two overs, while Jonathan Turner matched that economy with 1 for 4 of his own, also bowling a maiden. Ridith Kandadi was tidy with figures of 2-0-5-0, ensuring the Henley batsmen found run-scoring difficult throughout the middle overs.

For Henley, Alfie Harrison top-scored with 11 from 12 balls, and Rory Fitzgerald struck a six in his innings of 8 from 13 deliveries to provide brief moments of resistance. Oliver Brindle and Jack Waterhouse each made 6, but no Henley batsman was able to build a substantial innings against Sonning's disciplined attack. With four wickets falling and the run rate climbing steeply, the hosts never looked likely to challenge the target, and the Eagles ran out comfortable winners to collect a well-deserved two league points.
