Match Report

Popplewell's Brilliant Fifty and Century Opening Stand Steer Sonning 4th XI to Victory at Yateley

Sonning 4th XI travelled to Sean Devereux Park and produced a composed run chase to defeat Yateley in Division 9C, overhauling the hosts' total of 175 all out with five wickets in hand. Hugo Popplewell was the star of the show with a superb 57 off 63 balls, anchoring a dominant opening partnership that laid the foundation for a relatively comfortable win.

Yateley, having won the toss and elected to bat, found themselves in early difficulty when captain James Henstock was caught by Harrison Lott off the bowling of Shahbaz Ali for just 1. However, wicketkeeper Caty Salter and Aziz Rahman rebuilt the innings with a productive second-wicket stand of 65. Rahman was the more aggressive of the pair, striking six fours and three sixes in a fluent 57 off 54 balls that brought up the century for his side. Salter contributed a steady 26 from 48 deliveries before being caught off captain Arun Raghavendra's bowling.

Rahman's dismissal, trapped lbw by Nischal Tiwari with the score on 117, triggered a significant collapse. Tiwari was at the heart of it, removing Jo Muthalagan lbw for 10 and bowling Luke Jones for 8 in quick succession as Yateley slumped from 117 for two to 125 for six. Raghavendra also struck twice in this spell, pinning Srikanth Chowdary lbw for a golden duck and having Tyler Fagan caught, while Ali returned to bowl Spencer Fagan for 14.

Lee Collins provided some late resistance with a combative 29 off 30 balls, sharing a useful 34-run stand with Spencer Fagan for the eighth wicket that pushed the total past 150. But Ali cleaned up Collins to claim his third wicket, and Geethika Jyothis completed the innings by having Sathya Potharla stumped by Lott. The wickets were shared impressively among the Sonning attack, with Ali (3-29 from 8 overs), Tiwari (3-44 from 7) and Raghavendra (3-23 from 7) each claiming three scalps.

The chase began in emphatic fashion. Popplewell and Matthew Dawes put on a century opening partnership worth 101 runs, taking the game away from Yateley's bowlers from the outset. The pair reached their fifty stand in just 64 balls, with extras contributing generously as the home attack struggled for accuracy — 40 extras in total, including 22 wides, supplemented the Sonning batting effort handsomely.

Popplewell was the dominant force, reaching his half-century off 60 balls and striking 11 fours in an innings of crisp stroke-play. He eventually fell caught by Tyler Fagan off Bertie Henstock for 57 with the score on 101. Dawes, who had played the more patient role during the opening stand, continued to accumulate and held the innings together. He added 26 for the third wicket with Elliot Dawes before Aziz Rahman, switching from bat to ball, began to cause problems. Rahman picked up three wickets — Harrison Lott (3), Elliot Dawes (4) and eventually Matthew Dawes himself for a well-crafted 45 off 77 balls — to briefly give Yateley hope at 146 for four.

Christopher Dowse extinguished any lingering tension with an enterprising 19 off 23 balls, including three fours, sharing a 28-run partnership with Daniel Parks that carried Sonning to the brink of victory. Although Dowse was bowled by Jo Muthalagan with the score on 174, Parks (7 not out) and skipper Raghavendra (1 not out) saw the visitors home, reaching 176 for five in 35 overs to secure a thoroughly deserved win.
