Scorchers Fall Short as Goring Chase Down 135 at King George's Field

Sonning U13 Scorchers suffered a narrow defeat at home to Goring on 18th August, going down in a BYCL Under 13 Blast North West fixture at King George's Field. Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Scorchers posted 134 for 9 from their 18 overs, but Goring overhauled the target with more than three overs to spare, reaching 135 for 6 in 16.5 overs.

Saurav Sivaram provided the early impetus for Sonning with a blistering innings at the top of the order. He cracked 31 from just 21 balls, striking four fours and two sixes to give the Scorchers a commanding start. His opening partnership with Finley Andrews yielded 44 runs — Andrews contributing a brisk 8 off 4 balls with two boundaries before being bowled by Francis Ambridge. Sivaram's dismissal via a run out, with the score on 129 in the final over, ended an entertaining knock that had set the tone for the innings.

The middle order stuttered after Andrews' departure as Charlie Bright was stumped for a duck and captain Henry Verrier Jones fell to another run out for just 1, leaving Sonning wobbling at 61 for 4. It was Tejus Maddi who steadied the ship with a composed and unbeaten 30 from 26 deliveries, lacing five fours during a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 36 with Henry Bright, who contributed 7. Maddi's control through the middle overs ensured the Scorchers kept ticking along despite wickets falling around him.

Late contributions from Daniel Moseley (8 off 9 balls) and Utkarsh Sinha (7 not out off 15) helped push the total past 130, though three run outs in the innings highlighted some wayward running between the wickets. Extras played a significant role, with 42 added to the total, including 32 wides from the Goring attack. Samuel James was the pick of the visiting bowlers with 2 for 43 from his three overs, while Jonty Roy was notably economical, returning 1 for 4 from two overs.

Goring's reply was built on a dominant opening stand of 59 between Francis Ambridge and Freddie Blackwell. Ambridge batted with authority for 22 off 25 balls, including two fours and a six, before retiring not out. Blackwell matched him stroke for stroke with 21 from 21 deliveries before being caught by Jamie Dollinger off the bowling of Izaan Baloch, who claimed the first breakthrough.

Captain Samuel James maintained the momentum in the middle order, striking 13 off 11 balls with a four and a six before being caught by Charlie Bright off Finley Andrews' bowling. Monty Galer contributed 13 from 14 balls before being stumped by Henry Verrier Jones off Jamie Dollinger, but with the score already at 102 for 3, the visitors were well in command.

Utkarsh Sinha gave the Scorchers a glimmer of hope with two quick wickets — bowling Fenwick Partridge-Brown and having Edward Williams stumped by Verrier Jones in quick succession, both falling at 117. The flurry of wickets briefly threatened to derail Goring's chase at 123 for 6, but Felix Boyd smashed an unbeaten 8 from just four balls, dispatching two fours to seal the victory. Extras once again proved decisive, with 46 added to Goring's total, including 22 byes, which ultimately proved the difference in this closely fought contest.
