Match Report
Sharks Fall Short in Tight Pairs Contest at Jubilee Ground
Sonning U11 Sharks travelled to the Jubilee Ground to face Maidenhead & Bray in the U11 T16 Pairs North East league on 24th May 2023 and, despite matching the hosts' total of 83 runs, came away on the losing side after losing more wickets in a closely-run affair decided on the narrowest of margins.
Captain Charlie Bright won the toss and chose to field first, sending Maidenhead & Bray in to bat. The hosts' innings was anchored by Eesah Ahmed, who top-scored with 18 off 14 balls, striking two fours in the most fluent knock of the match. Rayann Al-Wakil contributed 10 off just 10 deliveries, also finding the boundary twice, while Guthrie Smyth added a useful 10 off 15 balls lower down the order.
The Sharks' bowling attack made regular inroads, claiming seven wickets across the 16 overs. Elias Haidari was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets from his three overs, though his figures of 3-19 were somewhat costly due to eight wides and two no-balls. Yusuf Malik provided excellent support with 1-3 from a single over. Extras proved a significant factor, with 32 runs added to the Maidenhead & Bray total — 15 of those coming from wides. Henry Bright bowled tidily at the top, conceding just nine runs from three overs, while Daniel Moseley was economical with figures of 0-6 from two overs.
Chasing 83, the Sharks found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Maidenhead & Bray bowling attack. The batting contributions were spread evenly but modestly across the line-up. Daniel Moseley top-scored with seven off 14 balls, while Charlie Bright matched that tally from 11 deliveries, finding one boundary. Henry Bright added six runs including a four, and Yusuf Malik and Elias Haidari each chipped in with five.
The Sharks' innings was heavily reliant on extras, with a remarkable 42 runs — more than half the total — coming from the sundries column. Maidenhead & Bray conceded 20 wides, 14 no-balls, and eight byes, but their bowlers compensated by taking 10 wickets. Sufyan Tirmizi was the most economical of the home bowlers, returning figures of 1-8 from three overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball. Eesah Ahmed backed up his batting display with two wickets from three overs.
Though both sides finished on identical totals of 83, the Sharks' 10 wickets lost compared to Maidenhead & Bray's seven proved decisive under the pairs format's scoring system, with the five-run dismissal penalty applied for each wicket tipping the balance firmly in the hosts' favour. The additional three wickets lost effectively cost the Sharks 15 runs in the final reckoning.
It was a match that highlighted both the promise and the areas for development within the young Sharks squad. The bowling effort, led by Haidari's three wickets, showed real potential, but a more disciplined approach with the bat — particularly in reducing dismissals — will be key as the league campaign progresses.
