Match Report

Sharks Left Frustrated as Rain Claims Abandoned Contest Against Bradfield

Sonning U11 Sharks were unable to complete their BYCL Tier 1 North West league fixture against Bradfield at Knowl Hill on Sunday, with the match ultimately abandoned and the points shared between the two sides.

Bradfield won the toss and elected to field, sending the Sharks in to bat first. In the pairs format, all ten Sonning batters had their opportunity at the crease, but finding the boundary proved elusive throughout the innings. The standout contribution came from Niko Jordinson, who struck a lively 11 from just five deliveries to top-score for the home side. Chloe Dawes added a steady 6 from 14 balls, while Oscar Tann contributed 5 from 18 deliveries in a more patient knock. Captain Jonathan Turner made 4 from 13 balls, and Anay Goswami and Leo Ribbens each scored 4 to chip in with useful runs.

Extras proved to be the dominant scorer in the Sonning innings, totalling a remarkable 50 — more than the 37 runs scored from the bat. Bradfield's bowlers collectively sent down 33 wides and 12 no-balls across their 20 overs, gifting the Sharks valuable additional runs. Joshua A was the most effective bowler for the visitors, claiming 2 wickets from his two overs for 8 runs, while captain Charlie P picked up 1 for 7 from three overs despite conceding six wides. The Sharks finished their innings on 87 for 5.

Bradfield's reply was far more fluent, and they raced to 122 for 2 from just 14 overs before the match was abandoned. Charlie H was the star of their innings, blazing an unbeaten 28 from 15 balls with five fours in an impressive display of clean hitting. Opener Ruben A set the tone at the top with a brisk 21 from 14 deliveries, including two boundaries, before falling to Leo Ribbens.

Charlie P contributed 11 from 10 balls, and Bertie A and Kasper A both added 9 apiece as Bradfield batted with authority throughout. Stanley A made 8 from 9 balls before becoming the second wicket to fall, dismissed by Oscar Tann. The visitors' batting lineup peppered the Sonning bowling attack to all parts of the ground.

Wicketkeeper Leo Ribbens was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning figures of 1 for 15 from his two overs with no extras conceded. Oscar Tann also claimed a wicket, though his two overs proved more expensive at 1 for 19, including eight wides and four no-balls. Niko Jordinson produced the most economical spell of the match, conceding just a single run from his one over. The remaining Sharks bowlers found life difficult against an aggressive Bradfield batting order, with Jovan Purwaha going for 23 from two overs and Anay Goswami conceding 20 from his two-over spell.

With Bradfield well ahead in the contest at 122 for 2 from 14 overs, the abandonment and subsequent sharing of five points apiece may well have come as a relief for the Sharks. It was a tough day with both bat and ball for Jonathan Turner's side, who will need to tighten up their discipline with extras if they are to compete against the stronger sides in the division.
