Towner and Taylor Rescue Sonning 3rd XI in Nail-Biting Three-Run Victory

Sonning 3rd XI produced a remarkable recovery from 36 for 5 to post 201 all out before holding their nerve to bowl Wokingham out for 198 at Reddam House, claiming a dramatic three-run victory in Division 7A.

Asked to bat first after Wokingham captain Prasad Kulkarni won the toss and chose to field, Sonning's top order crumbled against a probing opening attack. Mahesh Bhandary struck with the very first ball of the innings, trapping Harrison Lott lbw for a golden duck, and quickly added the wicket of Kavya Panchal for 1. Hayden Gooch, who would finish with four wickets, removed Ollie Terry for 4, while Gaurav Jayan (9) fell to Jim Keates. When Akash Vasa was pinned lbw by Gooch without scoring, Sonning were staring at a potential embarrassment at 36 for 5.

The fightback began with a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 38 between Aashmit Ghosh and Indeveer Sahota. Ghosh contributed a gritty 15 from 46 balls before falling caught, but Sahota attacked with greater intent, striking five fours and a six in a fluent 36 off 49 deliveries. His partnership of 30 with the incoming Ethan Towner gave Sonning genuine momentum before Sahota was bowled by Keates with the score on 104.

Towner, batting at number eight, then produced the innings of the match. His magnificent 53 from 59 balls, laced with ten boundaries, transformed the complexion of the game. Captain Sam Taylor proved an equally vital partner, and their ninth-wicket stand of 89 runs swung the match decisively in Sonning's favour. Taylor finished unbeaten on 35, an innings featuring four fours and a six from 45 deliveries, ensuring the visitors posted a competitive total of 201. Gooch was the pick of the Wokingham attack with 4 for 31 from nine overs, including four maidens, while Bhandary took 3 for 24.

Wokingham's reply started briskly as wicketkeeper Jitto Joseph smashed 13 from just 13 balls before being bowled by Ollie Terry, who was outstanding with the ball after his quiet day with the bat. Terry struck again immediately, trapping Suneer Bhat lbw for nought, and was involved in the run out of Sanveer Sidhu as Wokingham slipped to 25 for 3. When Ranjeet Sidhu fell bowled to Terry for 4, the hosts were 29 for 4 and in deep trouble.

Captain Kulkarni and Shiv Muniyappa then mounted a superb counter-attack. Their fifth-wicket partnership of 82 runs threatened to take the game away from Sonning, with Muniyappa particularly aggressive in his 40 from 60 balls, featuring four fours and two sixes. The breakthrough came when Ethan Towner effected the run out of Muniyappa, breaking the dangerous stand at 111. Kulkarni battled on to make 38 from 96 balls before Tom Wolfenden bowled him, and when Taylor removed Rahul Tak for 7, Wokingham had slumped to 130 for 7.

The lower order refused to surrender, however. Hayden Gooch anchored the tail with an unbeaten 19, sharing partnerships of 20 with Abdullah Aamir and 32 with Jim Keates that hauled Wokingham agonisingly close. Akash Vasa bowled Aamir for 9, and Terry returned to dismiss Keates for 12, before Bhandary's late cameo of 9 from six balls set pulses racing. With Wokingham needing just four to win, the final run out brought the innings to a close on 198, handing Sonning victory by the narrowest of margins. Terry's figures of 4 for 31 from eight overs proved match-defining, while the collective determination of a side reduced to 36 for 5 underlined the character within Sam Taylor's squad.
