Match Report

Sharks Cruise to Victory at Kings Field as Chirunamala and Alden Star

Sonning U11 Sharks secured an impressive away victory over Wargrave Under 11 Wombats at Kings Field on 23 June, posting 103 for 4 from their 20 overs before restricting the hosts to 96 for 7 in this BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league fixture.

Having been inserted after Wargrave won the toss and elected to field, the Sharks set about building a competitive total. Openers Finley Andrews and Jude Alden laid a steady platform, with Andrews striking seven runs from nine balls including a crisp boundary. Ethan Cawsey injected pace into the innings at number three, hitting 10 off just eight deliveries with a four of his own, while Aarib Ansari contributed a useful seven from 16 balls further down the order.

The real fireworks came from Arjun Chirunamala, who batted at number nine and produced the standout knock of the innings. Chirunamala blazed 15 runs from 11 balls, cracking three boundaries in an explosive cameo that propelled the Sharks' total beyond the 100 mark. Captain Mitul Kalidindi chipped in with four, and Anay Patel added six as contributions came from across the batting order. Extras proved significant, with the Wargrave bowlers conceding 43 in total, including 24 wides and 16 no-balls, reflecting a wayward day in the field.

Defending 103, the Sharks' bowling attack applied consistent pressure from the outset. Jude Alden produced the outstanding spell of the match, returning figures of 2 for 2 from his two overs — a remarkably parsimonious effort that strangled the Wargrave middle order. His double strike proved pivotal in keeping the hosts behind the required rate at a crucial stage.

Aarib Ansari continued his fine all-round contribution with 1 for 7 from two tidy overs, while captain Kalidindi claimed 1 for 7 from his two overs despite conceding four no-balls. Anay Patel bowled with excellent control, sending down a maiden in his spell of 0 for 4, and Thomas Waite also delivered a maiden over in his two-over allocation, though he conceded 12 runs in total.

Wargrave's reply was built around a spirited late fightback. Jacob Smith struck 12 from eight balls with two fours, and William Leppard made a brisk seven from six deliveries. Henry Cook contributed 10 from 18 balls in the middle of the innings, but it was the final two pairs who caused the Sharks the most concern. Henry Cook, batting at nine, hit 13 from 13 balls including two boundaries, while Jack Cowin launched an impressive 16 from 11 balls, clearing the rope for a six. However, their resistance came too late, with wickets falling at regular intervals earlier in the innings leaving too much to do.

Samuel Edwards picked up 1 for 22 from his two overs, though his eight wides and two no-balls offered the hosts a lifeline during the closing stages. Arjun Chirunamala rounded off an excellent personal display with a tidy spell of 0 for 6 from two overs, helping to ensure the Wargrave tail could not complete the chase. The Sharks ultimately ran out winners by seven runs, a result that underlined the value of their disciplined bowling through the middle overs and Chirunamala's explosive batting late in the first innings.
