Scorchers Undone by Dominant Henley Opening Stand at Harpsden

Sonning U17 Scorchers suffered a comprehensive defeat at Harpsden on 30 June, as Henley chased down a target of 137 with four overs to spare and only two wickets down in this BYCL Under 17 T20 Blast encounter.

Captain Shenul Widanapathirana won the toss and elected to bat, and openers Abhiveer Rawat and Sid Anilkumar gave the Scorchers a solid foundation. The pair put on 55 for the first wicket, with Rawat striking three fours and a six in a brisk 29 from 22 balls, while Anilkumar compiled a patient 28 from 31 deliveries, finding the boundary four times. The partnership was broken when Anilkumar was caught by Harry Monahan off Rowan Garfath-Nebbett, and from there the innings lost momentum.

Widanapathirana contributed 16 from 19 balls at number three, but once he was caught by Arjun Kothari off Atharv Gupta, the Scorchers' middle order crumbled. Three wickets fell for just 13 runs as Sonning slipped from 62 for two to 75 for four, with Max Murphy caught behind for two and Aashmit Ghosh bowled by Gupta for four. At 94 for six, the innings was in danger of petering out entirely.

Jack Wolfenden rescued the situation with a superb counter-attacking knock of 33 from just 21 balls, thumping two sixes and two fours in a vital seventh-wicket partnership of 42 with Jack Durrant, who finished unbeaten on five. That stand carried the Scorchers to 136 for eight from their 20 overs, a total that looked competitive but ultimately proved well short of par.

Gupta was the pick of the Henley bowlers, returning outstanding figures of 3-18 from his four overs, while Aakansh Naik claimed 2-23 and Garfath-Nebbett took 2-26 to keep the Scorchers in check throughout.

The Henley reply was ruthless. Captain George Piercy and Gupta, continuing his fine evening, shared a mammoth opening partnership of 98 that effectively ended the contest as a competition. Gupta was imperious, blazing 11 fours in a rapid 51 from 37 balls before retiring, while Piercy anchored the chase with an unbeaten 46 from 41 deliveries, peppered with eight boundaries. The Scorchers' bowling discipline suffered considerably, with 20 wides conceded during the innings — Widanapathirana alone sending down nine in his three overs — gifting Henley almost a free over in extras.

The Scorchers struggled to make any inroads, with eight bowlers used in a largely fruitless effort. Max Murphy produced a sharp piece of fielding to run out Jethro Kock, while Ghosh claimed the only bowling wicket when Joshua Ellison hit his own stumps, but by then the damage was long done. Garfath-Nebbett finished the job with an unbeaten 11 from seven balls as Henley reached 137 for two in just 16 overs, condemning the Scorchers to a heavy defeat despite the six bonus points earned from their batting and bowling efforts.
