Murphy's All-Round Heroics Steer Sonning 3rds to Hard-Fought Victory

Sonning 3rd XI secured a vital Division 8B win at Waingels College on Saturday, chasing down Bracknell's total of 139 all out with two wickets to spare, thanks largely to a superb all-round display from Max Murphy.

Bracknell won the toss and chose to bat, but their innings got off to the worst possible start when opener Addy Koli was caught by Harrison Lott off Murphy's bowling for a duck with the score on nought. From that precarious position, Anil Aliveli set about rebuilding, putting on 39 for the second wicket with Bhushan Vuppula before Murphy struck again, bowling Vuppula for 9. Aliveli then found a willing partner in Rashmi Sahoo, and the pair added 46 for the third wicket to push Bracknell into a position of relative comfort at 85 for 3.

Aliveli was the cornerstone of the Bracknell innings, striking nine fours in a composed knock of 56 from 72 balls. However, his dismissal — bowled by Aashmit Ghosh with the score on 97 — triggered a dramatic collapse. From 97 for 4, Bracknell lost their remaining six wickets for just 42 runs as Sonning's bowlers tightened the screws. Ghosh removed both Sahoo (14) and Satvik Saxena (1) in quick succession to finish with figures of 3 for 35 from his six overs.

The star of the bowling attack, however, was Jameel Ahamed, who was introduced as the fifth bowler and proved devastating. His miserly spell of 5.3 overs yielded four wickets for just 15 runs, including a maiden, as he cleaned up the Bracknell lower order. He bowled Amarjeet Kumar for 1, had Prashanth Chintamaneni caught by Murphy for 13, induced a catch from Jack Durrant to dismiss captain Gopi Kolluru for 4, and trapped Ashish Patidar lbw for 8. Murphy completed his fine bowling performance by bowling Gopichand Arikatla for a duck, finishing with 3 for 33 from eight overs.

The Sonning reply began disastrously. Hassan Shah fell lbw to Satvik Saxena for just 1 with only 4 on the board, and when Harrison Lott was bowled by the same bowler for 2, the hosts were wobbling at 12 for 2. Shamitha Widanapathirana offered brief resistance with 6 before being caught off Mohammad Hameed, and when captain Arun Kumar Pera was caught for 7 off Addy Koli, Sonning were in real trouble at 51 for 4.

Aseem Shafi had been the anchor through this turbulent period, occupying the crease for 52 balls while wickets fell around him. His departure for 15, caught by Hameed off Gopichand Arikatla with the score on 53, left Sonning at 53 for 5 — still requiring 87 more runs with only half the batting remaining.

What followed was the match-defining partnership. Rahul Sood joined Murphy at the crease, and the pair produced a magnificent stand of 74 for the sixth wicket that transformed the contest. Sood contributed a measured 29 from 51 deliveries, hitting two fours, while Murphy anchored the chase with calm authority. When Sood was eventually bowled by Arikatla with the score on 127, the target was within touching distance. Bracknell fought back, with Arikatla removing Jameel Ahamed lbw for 1 and Patidar trapping Asad Imam lbw for 3 to raise hopes of a remarkable turnaround at 132 for 8.

Murphy, though, was not to be denied. The all-rounder remained unbeaten on 37 from 78 balls, finding the boundary five times during a patient and match-winning innings. With Durrant providing steady support on 3 not out, Sonning reached their target of 140 for the loss of eight wickets in the 40th over, completing a fine victory built on Murphy's outstanding contribution of 3 for 33 with the ball and an unbeaten 37 with the bat.
