Sonning Women Fall Short as Wargrave's Veevers Blitz Proves Decisive

Sonning Women's 1st XI were unable to chase down a challenging target of 129 as Wargrave secured victory in their Super 8 Development Group D fixture on 22nd May 2022. Having won the toss and opted to field, captain Sharon Fleming's side found themselves on the back foot after a powerful Wargrave batting display, particularly from skipper Tia Veevers, who struck a superb 33 from just 15 balls.

Wargrave's innings got off to a brisk start with opener Amy Bennett smashing 19 off 12 deliveries, including three boundaries, before becoming one of three wickets to fall. Emily Lacey complemented her at the top of the order with 16 from 12 balls, and Kaelin Dell chipped in with 10 as the home side built a platform of steady contributions throughout their batting card.

The real damage, however, came from Veevers, who arrived late in the innings and proceeded to dismantle the Sonning attack. Her explosive knock featured five fours and a six, propelling Wargrave to an imposing total of 128 for 3 from their 16 overs. Ruth Payne also contributed a useful 11 from nine balls to keep the scoreboard ticking in the latter stages.

Sonning's bowlers toiled hard but struggled to contain the scoring rate. Grace Phillips was the pick of the attack, returning figures of 1 for 32 from her four overs, while Frances Howson claimed a wicket but proved expensive, conceding 40 runs from her four overs including six wides. Chloe Bailey also took a wicket with her three overs costing 29. Siobhan Davis bowled a tidy spell of 3-0-15-0, and Melissa Pengraeve was economical in her single over, conceding just three runs. Extras proved costly for Sonning, with 23 runs gifted to the home side, including 20 wides.

In reply, Sonning's chase never truly gained momentum. Siobhan Davis top-scored as opener with 11 from 16 balls, including one four, but partnerships were difficult to build against a disciplined Wargrave bowling unit. Chloe Bailey made five and Grace Phillips contributed five before being dismissed twice in the pairs format.

Melissa Pengraeve provided the most enterprising batting of the Sonning innings, striking 15 from 12 balls with two boundaries to briefly inject some urgency into the run chase. Captain Sharon Fleming added seven, and Elinor Longridge batted sensibly for her eight from 14 deliveries lower down the order, but the required rate continued to climb beyond reach.

Emily Lacey was the standout with the ball for Wargrave, taking 2 for 11 from her two overs, while Kaelin Dell and Ruth Payne were particularly miserly, conceding just 12 from three and nine from three respectively. Sonning ultimately finished on 76 for 3 from their 16 overs, falling 52 runs short of their target in a match where the first-innings deficit proved too steep to overcome.
