Match Report

Sonning Sunday 1s Defend 210 to Secure Victory at Cookham

Sonning Sunday 1s posted 210 all out before their bowlers held firm to restrict Odney to 185 for 5 from their 40 overs, earning a hard-fought 25-run victory in this friendly fixture at the Odney Club, Cookham on 7th September.

Asked to bat first after Odney captain Kelvin Baillie won the toss and elected to field, Sonning skipper Richard Skeil led from the front with an aggressive 22 from 28 balls at the top of the order, striking two fours and a six as he and wicketkeeper Moksha Suriarachchi (11) put on 28 for the opening stand. Cameron Van Heerden removed both openers to leave Sonning at 39 for 2, but Robert Jones then seized control of the innings with a blistering knock of 44 off just 33 deliveries. Jones hammered seven fours and two sixes in a devastating display, adding 47 for the third wicket with Edward Jones (16) to push the score to 86 before being caught by Baillie off the bowling of Amit John.

The middle order stuttered as Sonning slipped from 96 for 3 to 104 for 5, with Bharat Rathod departing for a duck. Arun Raghavendra steadied matters with a composed 21, sharing a 32-run stand with Arun Kumar Pera (20) for the sixth wicket before falling caught off Elliot Van Heerden. At 162 for 8, Sonning's innings appeared to be winding down, but Aahaan Sharma had other ideas. The young batsman blazed 30 from just 17 balls, including four fours and a six, and his unbroken partnership of 34 with Peter Higginbottom (17 not out off 12 balls) hauled Sonning to a competitive 210 all out in 35.4 overs. Amit John was the pick of the Odney attack with 2 for 19 from five overs, while Van Heerden, Wes Gale, and Graham Swales each claimed wickets.

Odney's reply got off to a commanding start as Baillie and Aseem Shafi constructed an opening partnership of 70. Shafi contributed a patient 26 from 55 balls before being trapped lbw by Arun Kumar Pera, but Baillie continued to anchor the chase with an authoritative innings built on clean striking through the covers, lacing 12 boundaries in his knock of 74 from 99 deliveries. V Bhatnagar joined his captain and the pair added 76 for the second wicket, taking the score to 146 and seemingly putting Odney firmly on course.

The match turned dramatically when Kishan Akula dismissed Baillie, caught for 74, breaking the dangerous partnership. Akula then removed V Bhatnagar (24) to leave Odney wobbling at 161 for 4, before Robert Jones struck twice in quick succession to bowl Alistair Wood (6) and Amit John (2), reducing the hosts to 163 for 5. The required rate had climbed sharply and with their two set batsmen gone, Odney's chase lost all momentum.

Graham Swales (10 not out) and Rahul Mohindru (4 not out) saw out the remaining overs but could not force the pace sufficiently, with the target proving beyond reach. The 39 extras in Odney's innings — including 18 wides and 16 byes — kept the scoreboard ticking but were ultimately insufficient to bridge the gap.

Kishan Akula's outstanding figures of 2 for 24 from eight overs proved decisive, while Robert Jones completed a superb all-round display with 2 for 22 from his eight overs to complement his top-scoring 44 with the bat. Peter Higginbottom also deserved credit for an economical spell of 0 for 26 from eight tidy overs that helped maintain pressure during the middle overs of the chase.
