Spartans Fall Short as Marlow's River R Fires Visitors to Victory

Sonning U11 Spartans won the toss and opted to field first in this BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) fixture at Reading Blue Coat School, but Marlow posted an imposing 170 for 4 from their 20 overs that ultimately proved too much for the home side to chase down.

Marlow's innings was built around a devastating contribution from River R, who smashed 42 from just 17 balls, clearing the boundary twice and finding the rope on seven occasions. Captain Fred F complemented the assault with a brisk 23 off 11 deliveries, striking four fours despite being dismissed twice in the pairs format. Anderson A added 17 off nine balls, while contributions from Gray G (15 off 14) and Viv V (13 off 15) ensured the visitors' total was spread across the card. Twenty-nine extras, including 17 wides, further boosted Marlow's score.

Niko Jordinson was the standout performer with the ball for the Spartans, claiming 2 for 19 from his three overs, while captain Bhuvik Rao Mane Prakashrao Santhoshrao picked up the other wicket, returning figures of 1 for 27 from three overs. The remaining six Sonning bowlers all went wicketless, though Tanav Shanmugam proved the most economical, conceding just 10 runs from his two overs, and Kirrthhana Yennaboina bowled tidily with figures of 0 for 13 from two overs without conceding a wide or no-ball.

Chasing 171, the Spartans were unable to match the required run rate despite some spirited contributions. Muhammad Ansari top-scored with an enterprising 21 from 12 balls, finding the boundary four times to inject some urgency into the lower order. Captain Bhuvik produced a handy 16 off 12 deliveries with three fours, while Tanav Shanmugam made a useful 14 from 13 balls at the top of the order.

Kirrthhana Yennaboina showed fine application with 13 runs from 19 balls, including two boundaries, and Yannis Marti contributed 8 from 10 at the top. However, three dismissals — Yannis, and Niko Jordinson who was out twice — cost the Spartans 15 runs in penalties under the pairs format, further hampering their pursuit.

Marlow's bowling was disciplined across the board, with Fred F and River R both returning miserly figures of 2 for 3 from their respective two-over spells. Henry H, Anderson A, and William W each claimed a wicket apiece, while Lucas L conceded just seven runs without a wide or no-ball in sight. The visitors did leak 39 extras, including 20 byes and 12 wides, offering the Spartans some freebies, but it was not nearly enough.

The Spartans closed on 133 for 3 from their 20 overs, falling 37 runs short. While the result was not in their favour, there were encouraging individual displays — Ansari's free-scoring batting, Jordinson's two-wicket bowling spell, and the tidy economy of Shanmugam and Yennaboina all provided positives for the home side to build upon.
