Tahir and Skeil's Half-Centuries Partnership in Vain as Sunday As Fall Short Against Prestcold

Sonning Sunday As were left to rue a dramatic batting collapse after losing their final eight wickets for just 72 runs, as Prestcold chased down 166 with six wickets in hand at Coppid Hall Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Prestcold captain Andrew Rosier won the toss and inserted the hosts on a surface that offered plenty for both bat and ball. Openers Naqash Tahir and Richard Skeil made the visitors pay handsomely for that decision, constructing a superb first-wicket stand of 93. Skeil was the more aggressive of the pair, striking nine fours and a six in a fluent 62 from 73 balls before falling caught off the bowling of one of the Prestcold seamers. Tahir anchored proceedings at the other end, accumulating steadily as he moved towards a well-deserved half-century.

The departure of Skeil triggered a swift downturn in Sonning's fortunes. Robert Jones managed just a single before being caught off James Prior, and Sophie Smith endured a torrid time at the crease, grinding through 19 balls without scoring before being run out. At 112 for 3, Sonning still had Tahir at the crease and a platform to build upon. The experienced all-rounder added 27 for the fourth wicket alongside Daniel Parks, pushing the score to 139 before Parks fell caught off Jonny Gingell for 3.

From there, the innings disintegrated. Waqas Tahir (2), Partha Pal (0), and Marcus Hawkins (0) all departed cheaply, and when Naqash Tahir was finally dismissed for an excellent 72 — his knock spanning 81 balls and featuring seven fours and two sixes — Sonning had slumped from 139 for 4 to 149 for 8. Nischal Tiwari provided a late flourish with a quickfire 13 from just eight deliveries, but Kieran Exley wrapped up the innings in his next over, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 for 34 from 6.5 overs. Gingell chipped in with 2 for 18 from his four overs to complete a fine bowling display.

Prestcold's reply began purposefully, with Phil Desbois and Kieran Exley putting on 28 for the first wicket before Robert Jones had Desbois bowled for 5. Jones was Sonning's standout bowler, producing a disciplined spell of 8 overs for 30 runs and two wickets. He also accounted for Ali Riaz, who had added 43 for the second wicket with Exley before being bowled for 16.

Exley continued to bat with authority, reaching 44 from 60 balls with seven boundaries before he was caught by Piyanshu Desai off Abdul Haadi Naqash. At 86 for 3, Sonning had genuine hope of defending their modest total, but Andrew Towse and Luke Rosier had other ideas. The pair added 37 in quick time, with Luke Rosier smashing 23 from just 12 balls — including three fours and a six — before being caught by Jones off Naqash. That wicket came at 123 for 4, but it proved to be Sonning's last.

James Prior joined Towse and the pair knocked off the remaining runs without further alarm. Prior struck five fours in his unbeaten 26 from 21 balls, while Towse finished on 31 not out from 50 deliveries, guiding Prestcold to their target of 166 with plenty of overs to spare. The 21 extras conceded by Sonning's bowlers — including six wides from James Charlton-Perez alone — eased the visitors' passage considerably, taking the gloss off what had been a valiant effort in the field.

For Sonning skipper Skeil, the frustration will centre on his side's inability to capitalise on the excellent start provided by the opening partnership. After being 93 without loss, a total of 165 all out represented a significant underperformance, and the loss of seven wickets for 23 runs between the fall of Skeil and Tahir's dismissal ultimately proved the decisive passage of the match.
