Falcons Fall Short as Henley's Extras-Laden Total Proves Too Much at The Brakespear Ground
Sonning U9 Falcons travelled to The Brakespear Ground on 11th May for a friendly pairs fixture against Henley Under 9 Pumas, but despite winning the toss and electing to field, captain Ahmad Naqash's side were unable to contain the hosts, who posted 149 from their 20 overs before restricting the Falcons to just 60 in reply.
Henley's first-innings total was heavily inflated by extras, which accounted for 97 of their 149 runs — a figure that will concern the Falcons' coaching staff. Wides contributed 42 runs alone, while no-balls added a further 38, with 16 byes also leaking through. Of the Henley batters, Alfie Harrison was by far the most destructive, smashing 20 from just 13 balls with four boundaries to provide the hosts' most significant contribution with the bat. James Monahan (8 off 17), James Taylor (7 off 10), Barney Irving (7 off 17), and Advik Vinoth (7 off 15, including a four) all chipped in with useful scores.
The standout bowling performance for the Falcons came from Kabir Nair Bansode, who delivered a superb spell of 2-4-1, including a maiden over — a remarkable achievement at this age group. His control and accuracy stood in stark contrast to several of his teammates' struggles with line and length. Veeraj Sall also bowled tidily, conceding just five runs from his spell without a wide or no-ball, while Maurya Chirunamala was similarly economical with figures of 0-9 from his overs, also free of extras.
Arthur Miles and Jenu Babu each claimed a wicket apiece for the Falcons, though both were expensive, conceding 14 and 15 runs respectively with a combined 16 wides and eight no-balls between them. The most costly spell came from Aaryashi Tiwari, who conceded 28 runs including 22 no-balls, while Aaditya Amrite's two overs went for 26, with 13 of those coming from wides.
Chasing 150, the Falcons' reply never gained momentum against a disciplined Henley attack. Kabir Nair Bansode was the sole bright spot with the bat, top-scoring with 12 off 15 balls, an innings that included both a four and an impressive six — the only maximum of the match. Veeraj Sall contributed four from nine balls at the top of the order, and Ahmad Naqash made two, but no other Falcons batter managed more than a single run.
Henley's bowlers were far more disciplined than their Sonning counterparts. Sebastian Grove was outstanding, returning figures of 2-1 from his two overs with a maiden, conceding just a solitary run. Captain Jack Waterhouse was equally impressive, taking 2-3 from two overs including a maiden. Advik Vinoth picked up a wicket while conceding only two runs, and Cooper Lynch bowled two overs for just one run with a maiden of his own. Alfie Harrison added to his match contribution with a wicket in his bowling spell.
The Falcons were dismissed seven times during their innings compared to Henley's four, and the five-run dismissal penalty in this pairs format compounded their difficulties. While the 37 extras conceded by Henley's bowlers gave the Falcons some relief, it was nowhere near enough to bridge the 89-run deficit. Kabir Nair Bansode's all-round display — a maiden and a wicket with the ball followed by a six and a four with the bat — was a genuine highlight for Sonning on a difficult afternoon, and his continued development will be one to watch as the season progresses.
