Match Report

Sabres Secure Comfortable Victory at Wokingham Behind Strong All-Round Display

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Wokingham Cricket Club on Wednesday evening and delivered a convincing performance in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central league, posting 115 for 7 before restricting their hosts to 91 for 6 to claim a well-deserved victory.

Captain Jonathan Turner won the toss and elected to bat on a dry evening at Wokingham. The decision proved a sound one as Sonning's batters made the most of their 20 overs, with contributions spread across the order. Arjun Chirunamala was the standout performer at the top, striking a fluent 14 off just 12 balls, finding the boundary twice, while opening partner Archie Jansen complemented him well with 12 off 12 deliveries, including a four of his own. The pair gave Sonning a positive platform from which to build.

Turner himself anchored the later stages of the innings superbly, top-scoring with an unbeaten 16 off 14 balls, hitting two fours and demonstrating the composure expected of a skipper. Rayyan Khan Jadoon chipped in with a useful 9, while Sebastian Cook (6), Elijah Patterson (5) and Jovan Purwaha (5) all made small but valuable contributions. The Sabres also benefited handsomely from 42 extras, with 29 wides proving particularly costly for Wokingham's bowlers. Ali Shah (2-15) and Dinuk Abhayawickrama (1-17) both conceded nine and thirteen wides respectively from their two-over spells, handing Sonning easy runs throughout.

Wokingham's best bowling came from Aadit Khandelwal, who claimed 2 for 12 from his two overs, and Ashar Asad, who also took two wickets while conceding just five runs. Nivaan Moorthy chipped in with 1 for 7, but the discipline issues elsewhere in the attack undermined those individual efforts.

Chasing 116 for victory, Wokingham found the Sonning bowling attack a tough proposition. Chirunamala was outstanding with the new ball, delivering a maiden in his opening spell and finishing with remarkable figures of 2-1-1-1. His control set the tone for the entire defence, putting the home side immediately on the back foot. At the other end, wicketkeeper Zain Baloch was equally impressive in a different role, bowling two consecutive maidens and conceding nothing from his 12 deliveries — a quite exceptional spell at any level.

Elijah Patterson proved the most destructive of the Sonning bowlers, picking up 2 for 2 from his two overs to tighten the noose on Wokingham's middle and lower order. Ali Shah offered the most resistance for the hosts with 13 off 16 balls, including two boundaries, while captain Aiden Campbell struck a brisk 12 off 11 deliveries with a four. Nyra Bhat made 9 and Charlie Hudson contributed 7, but none could build the sustained partnerships needed to threaten the target.

Wokingham's innings was also hampered by 37 extras conceded by Sonning, with 18 no-balls a concern — Archie Jansen's two overs included eight no-balls alongside his one wicket, and Yutika Reddy Akula bowled six in her spell. However, the tight bowling from Chirunamala, Baloch and Patterson more than compensated, ensuring Wokingham finished well short on 91 for 6, handing the Sabres a deserved 24-run victory and a full 20 league points.
