Match Report

Sonning Women Secure Victory at King George's Field Despite Falling Short of Target

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a winning result against Wokingham in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture at King George's Field on 24th May, despite finishing on 97 in reply to Wokingham's 105. In this pairs format, where teams start with 200 runs and lose five for each dismissal, captain Katie Barrows' decision to field first after winning the toss proved the decisive call, as Sonning's superior wicket-taking restricted Wokingham's scoring while their own batting line-up lost just one wicket in response.

Wokingham's innings was built around a forceful contribution from Michaela Evans, who top-scored with an unbeaten 22 from just 12 balls, striking three boundaries to provide late impetus. Tisha Garnes added 12 from 13 deliveries, while captain Rashmi Singh and Leanne Freeth each contributed nine. The visitors posted 105 for 3 from their 16 overs, though their total was bolstered by 31 extras, including 20 wides, as Sonning's bowlers struggled at times with their lines.

Barrows was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, claiming 2 for 28 from her four overs to account for two of the three Wokingham dismissals. Kira Knight chipped in with 1 for 18 from three overs, and those three wickets — each costing Wokingham five runs under the pairs format — proved crucial to the final outcome. Rits Rana bowled a tidy spell of 2-0-9-0, providing control in the middle overs.

In reply, Sonning's batters contributed steadily if unspectacularly. Hannah Brooks was the pick of the order, hitting 12 from 12 balls with two boundaries, while Barrows continued her influential match with 10 from 16 deliveries. Rits Rana struck a brisk 8 from 12 balls including a four, and Michaela Herrett grafted 8 from 17 balls lower down to ensure Sonning kept ticking along.

The Sonning innings was characterised by an extraordinarily high extras tally of 46, with Wokingham's bowlers sending down 45 wides across their 16 overs. Tisha Garnes conceded 17 wides in her three overs, while captain Rashmi Singh leaked 14 from her three-over spell. Garnes did claim the solitary Sonning wicket, but the constant flow of extras meant the home side were never under serious pressure.

Wokingham's most disciplined bowlers were Iris Pritchard, who bowled a maiden in her four-over spell of 0 for 19, and Michaela Evans, who followed up her batting exploits with figures of 0 for 15 from four overs. However, their efforts were undermined by the profligacy at the other end, which gifted Sonning nearly half their total in extras alone.

Sonning finished on 97 for 1 from their 16 overs but, crucially, the single wicket lost compared to Wokingham's three made all the difference under the pairs scoring system. The result earned Sonning six league points to Wokingham's one, a reward for a disciplined collective effort in which every member of the squad played their part in a well-managed victory.
