U13 Sharks Fall 21 Runs Short as Reading's Batting Depth Proves Decisive

Sonning U13 Sharks were unable to chase down a challenging target of 132 at Knowl Hill CC on 26 August, falling to a 21-run defeat against Reading Tigers in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North West league fixture. Despite a spirited middle-order fightback, early wickets left the Sharks with too much to do against a well-drilled Reading attack.

Reading captain R Haroon won the toss and chose to bat, a decision vindicated by an impressive first-innings display. Openers Dhvaneet Suthar (13 off 11 balls) and Kapish Sharma got the Tigers off to a brisk start, putting on 27 for the first wicket before Suthar was run out by the alert Yuvaansh Sharma. That dismissal did little to slow Reading's momentum as Kapish Sharma continued to strike the ball cleanly, racing to 32 off just 23 deliveries, an innings laced with six boundaries, before retiring not out.

Sharvil Jadav proved equally impressive at number three, compiling 29 off 30 balls with six fours of his own. The pair's presence at the crease allowed Reading to build a commanding platform, and by the time Zuhair Bhatti fell bowled by Tavish Malik for 10, the score had already reached 99 for two. Snithik Subash added a handy 11 and Ayan Pradhan struck an unbeaten 10 as Reading posted 131 for four from their 16 overs.

The Sharks' bowling was spread across ten bowlers, with captain Divik Gupta returning the most economical figures of 2-0-7-0. Tavish Malik claimed the only wicket to fall to a bowler, dismissing Bhatti, while the fielding side executed three run-outs — two through Yuvaansh Sharma and one via Utkarsh Sinha. However, 25 extras, including 19 wides, added significantly to Reading's total and proved costly in the final reckoning.

The Sharks' reply began disastrously. Yuvaansh Sharma was bowled first ball by Dhvaneet Suthar, and Utkarsh Sinha followed shortly after, run out without scoring with the total on just 10. At 10 for two, Sonning were already under considerable pressure and in danger of the contest slipping away from them entirely.

Izaan Baloch steadied the innings with a composed and authoritative knock. He put on 36 for the third wicket with wicketkeeper Anay Patel (3), taking the attack to Reading's bowlers with seven fours in his 33 off 30 balls before retiring not out — comfortably the standout innings of the Sharks' reply. However, wickets continued to fall at the other end. Patel was bowled by Roshan Srinivasan, and skipper Gupta was run out by Sharvil Jadav for 2, leaving the Sharks at 53 for four.

Tavish Malik injected fresh impetus into the chase with an enterprising 20 off 22 balls, hitting four boundaries and sharing useful partnerships either side. He and Dhruv Reddy Kantigari added 29 for the fifth wicket before Kantigari was bowled by Vaidhya Kumar for 1, and then Malik put on a further 28 with Henry Buttler before falling caught off the bowling of Zuhair Bhatti. Buttler remained unbeaten on 13 from 15 balls, striking three fours, but with time and wickets running out, the Sharks could only reach 110 for six from their 16 overs. Extras contributed 38 to the total — including 22 wides — but it was not enough to bridge the gap, and Reading claimed a deserved victory.
