Spartans Stumble in Chase as Littlewick Green Prove Too Strong at Knowl Hill
Sonning U13 Spartans suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Littlewick Green at Knowl Hill CC on Sunday, unable to rein in a well-spread opposition batting effort before collapsing to 85 all out in reply to 136 for 1.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Sonning will have hoped to restrict Littlewick Green's batters on what appeared a fair surface. Instead, the opposition produced a disciplined and aggressive batting display across their 20 overs. Maxi Feiler top-scored with 21 from 21 balls, while Toby Dudderidge contributed a fluent 17 off 19 deliveries. Beau Carson struck a brisk 14 from just nine balls, and Hugo Allies added a patient 10. Berty Luke was particularly destructive, smashing five fours in an unbeaten 11 off ten balls to inject late momentum.
The Spartans' bowling unit struggled to build sustained pressure, conceding 46 extras — including 17 wides and 10 no-balls — which gifted Littlewick Green nearly a third of their total. Mitul Kalidindi claimed the only wicket to fall, bowling S Hirst for 1, but his two overs proved costly, going for 24 runs. The most economical Sonning bowlers were Dhiren Panchal, who conceded just seven from his two overs, Aarib Ansari with eight from two, and Jude Alden, who delivered a tidy single over for just one run.
The Spartans' reply began disastrously. Izaan Baloch was trapped lbw by Leo Samuel-Gibbon for a duck with only one run on the board, and moments later Stanley Cox was run out for 1 to leave Sonning reeling at 2 for 2. Joseph Parker fell caught behind off Monty Roberts without scoring, and when Divik Gupta was run out for 4, the Spartans had slumped to 16 for 4 with the chase in tatters.
Aarib Ansari showed some resistance with 7 from 24 balls before he was caught by George Whitechurch off S Hirst's bowling with the score on 25. It was left to Mitul Kalidindi and Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem to mount the most significant partnership of the innings, adding 48 for the sixth wicket to at least lend some respectability to the scorecard.
Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem was the standout performer with the bat for Sonning, striking three fours in a gritty 19 from 40 balls before retiring not out. Kalidindi contributed 11, including a four, before being bowled by Harwin Benwara. Once that partnership was broken at 73, the remaining wickets fell swiftly. Matyas Sheppard was caught by Whitechurch off Hugo Allies for a duck, and Jude Alden was run out for 1 as Sonning were bowled out for 85.
Littlewick Green's bowling attack was disciplined throughout the second innings. Monty Roberts was the pick of the bowlers, returning excellent figures of 3-1-5-1 including a maiden, while Harwin Benwara matched him with 2-1-4-1. Leo Samuel-Gibbon's opening spell of 2-0-3-1 set the tone early, and Hugo Allies chipped in with 3-1-15-1. The visitors' fielding was sharp, with wicketkeeper Whitechurch taking two catches behind the stumps.
The 51-run defeat exposed Sonning's vulnerability at the top of the order, where the first five batters managed just 12 runs between them. The extras column told its own story on both sides — Littlewick Green's bowlers conceded 41 extras in the second innings, including 28 wides — but their batting depth and bowling variety ultimately proved the decisive factors.
