Stingers Fall Short as Wokingham Dominate at The Oratory School

Sonning U11 Stingers found themselves on the wrong end of a comprehensive defeat as Wokingham proved too strong in this Girls U11 Super 6s North league fixture at The Oratory School on 25th June 2023.

Wokingham won the toss and chose to insert Sonning, a decision that was quickly vindicated. The Stingers struggled to get going against disciplined opposition bowling, with captain Aarohi Tyagi managing just 1 run from 12 balls as she opened the innings. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker fared no better at the other end, unable to trouble the scorers from her six deliveries.

Jessica Hawkins provided the one bright spot of the Sonning batting effort, top-scoring with 10 runs from 11 balls, including the only boundary of the innings. Her four was a welcome sight for the home supporters, but she ultimately fell as the Stingers lost four wickets across their nine overs. Ruby Cross (1), Megan Symes (2) and Charlotte Hickman (0) could add little to the total, which limped to 36 for 4.

The standout bowling performance came from Jasmine Malhan, whose miserly spell of 2 overs yielded just 1 run and a wicket, including a maiden over — a remarkable achievement at this level. Grace Mckehon and Lamiah Salman each claimed a wicket apiece, while Millie Ballantine also chipped in with a scalp from her two overs. Extras accounted for 22 of Sonning's 36 runs, highlighting how difficult the batters found it to score off the bat.

Wokingham's reply was emphatic. They chased down the target without losing a single wicket across their nine overs, posting 67 in total. Millie Ballantine led the charge with an unbeaten 15 from 14 balls, striking one four, while Lamiah Salman contributed a fluent 13 from 11 deliveries. Captain Grace Mckehon added 9 runs and Annabel Westrap chipped in with 5 as the visitors batted with confidence throughout.

The Sonning bowlers toiled hard but could not find a breakthrough. Captain Aarohi Tyagi was the most economical, conceding just 6 runs from her over without a wide or no-ball — a tidy effort. Jessica Hawkins bowled steadily with figures of 2-0-10-0, but extras proved costly for the Stingers, with 38 in total boosting the Wokingham score significantly, including 20 penalty runs that further inflated the away side's total.

It was a tough afternoon for the young Stingers, who will take heart from Hawkins's batting and Tyagi's controlled bowling spell but were ultimately outplayed across both innings by a well-organised Wokingham side.
