Sonning Sunday 1s Fall Short in Run Chase After Theale Post 300

Sonning Sunday 1s travelled to Theale & Tilehurst on 19 April for a friendly fixture and, having won the toss and opted to field, were made to pay for the decision as the hosts amassed an imposing 300 for 5 from their 40 overs. Despite a spirited batting effort led by Neil Jasti's fluent half-century, Sonning were bowled out for 195 in 36.5 overs, falling 105 runs short.

Theale's innings was built around a commanding 127-run second-wicket partnership between Baber Hussain and James White. Hussain was the dominant force, striking 89 from 67 balls in a dazzling display that included 15 fours and three sixes. White anchored the other end with a patient 31 from 54 deliveries before both fell to the bowling of Indeveer Sahota, who was comfortably Sonning's most effective bowler. Elvis Da Costa had earlier provided a brisk start at the top of the order, smashing 27 from just 20 balls — all of his runs coming in boundaries — before he was caught off Aashmit Ghosh.

The loss of three wickets in relatively quick succession briefly gave Sonning hope, as the score moved from 161 for 2 to 196 for 4. But Jihan Mishra then took the attack apart with a blistering unbeaten 83 from 52 balls, lacing eight fours and five towering sixes. His 68-run stand with Jaden Viljoen for the fifth wicket propelled Theale past 260, and Shravan Sathiyan's unbeaten cameo of 13 from 10 balls helped push the total to the 300 mark.

Sahota was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, returning excellent figures of 3 for 20 from his full allocation of eight overs, including two maidens. Ethan Towner and Ghosh claimed a wicket apiece, but the remaining bowlers struggled to contain the scoring. Moksha Suriarachchi conceded 43 from just three overs, while Ahmed Ali's two overs went for 30.

Chasing 301, Sonning lost captain Richard Skeil in the second over, bowled by Ram Sankaran for 8. That brought Ahmed Ali to the crease, and together with Jasti the pair rebuilt impressively, putting on 73 for the second wicket. Ali struck 36 from 33 balls with seven boundaries before being trapped lbw by Sankaran, and Jasti continued to play with freedom, reaching his half-century in quick time.

Jasti and Arun Kumar Pera added a further 38 for the third wicket to take the score to 119, but the dismissal of Pera, caught by Jihan Mishra off Brian Cooper for 9, triggered a dramatic collapse. Jasti followed immediately, caught by Ram Sankaran off Robert Dimmack for a well-made 55 from 45 balls, leaving Sonning 119 for 4. The required run rate was climbing steeply, and the middle order could not maintain the momentum.

Duncan Parr battled admirably at number six, making 32 from 54 balls as wickets tumbled around him. Dimmack was devastating through the middle overs, picking up 4 for 30 from eight overs, including the scalps of Moksha Suriarachchi and Ethan Towner in successive deliveries as Sonning slumped from 148 for 5 to 153 for 8. Parr and Sahota combined for a defiant 37-run ninth-wicket stand, but once Parr was bowled by James White for 32, the end came swiftly. Sahota finished unbeaten on 20, but Ghosh was trapped lbw by White to bring the innings to a close at 195 all out.
