Sonning Women Edge Past Crowthorne in Tight Pairs Contest

Sonning Women's 1st XI secured a hard-fought three-run victory over Crowthorne & Crown Wood in their Super 8 Development Group 2 fixture on 14th May 2023, defending a modest total of 54 with a disciplined bowling display that restricted the hosts to 51 for eight.

Having been asked to bat first after Crowthorne won the toss and elected to field, Sonning found run-scoring difficult against a varied home attack. Opener Siobhan Davis top-scored with a brisk 16 off 17 balls, providing the most significant contribution with the bat. At the other end of the innings, Elinor Longridge added a valuable 8 from 17 deliveries to give the total some substance. Melissa Pengraeve chipped in with 5 off 13 balls, but no other Sonning batter managed more than 3 runs as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Extras played a substantial role in Sonning's innings, contributing 24 of the team's 54 runs. Crowthorne's bowlers were guilty of conceding 10 wides and 8 no-balls across their 16 overs, gifting almost half the total in sundries. Lucinda Rhodes was the pick of the home attack, claiming 2 for 12 from her three overs, while Lily Mansfield bowled a full allocation of four overs for 1 for 10.

Gillian Finucane delivered the most economical spell of the match, conceding just 3 runs from three overs with a maiden, though she went wicketless. Captain Gabriella Jones was similarly tight with 4 runs from two overs.

Defending 54, captain Sharon Fleming's side produced a superb collective bowling effort. Frances Howson set the tone with an outstanding spell of 4-1-6-1, her maiden over helping to build early pressure on the Crowthorne top order. Kate Pobjoy was held scoreless from 12 balls, and wickets tumbled throughout the innings as the required rate climbed.

Crowthorne captain Gabriella Jones offered the most resistance, top-scoring with 10 off 19 balls, while Lily Mansfield contributed 8 from 14 deliveries including the only boundary of the hosts' innings. Lou Walker was dismissed three times in the pairs format, her 5 runs coming at a heavy cost of 15 penalty runs. Every Sonning bowler who was called upon claimed at least one scalp, with Grace Phillips (2-0-6-1), Elinor Longridge (2-0-8-1), Chloe Bailey (3-0-15-1), and Siobhan Davis (3-0-7-1) all contributing wickets.

With eight wickets falling and the penalty runs that accompany them in pairs cricket, Crowthorne's chase stalled three runs short. The hosts managed only 37 runs from the bat, supplemented by 14 extras, but the regular loss of wickets proved decisive. Sonning collected six league points from the victory, leaving Crowthorne with just a single point from the afternoon's contest.
