Match Report

U9 Kestrels Claim Victory in Entertaining Pairs Contest Against Falcons

Sonning CC U9 Kestrels posted 118 for 2 from their 16 overs before restricting the U9 Falcons to 108 for 7 in an intra-club friendly at King George's Field on 28 June, securing a well-deserved 10-run victory.

Captain Oscar Williams won the toss and elected to bat, a decision vindicated by a strong collective effort from the Kestrels' top order. Jonathan Turner led the way with a fluent 12 off 11 balls, striking two boundaries, while Havishreddy Basireddy matched that tally with 12 off 12 deliveries including a four. Lewis Towner contributed a busy 11 from 11 balls, accumulating his runs in singles and twos with impressive running between the wickets.

Oscar Williams chipped in with 10 off 13 balls, finding the boundary once, while Edward Heath added a useful 8 from his 12 deliveries. Ridith Kandadi opened the innings with 6, and both Jasper Hawkins and Daniel Gomez scored 4 apiece as the Kestrels ensured every batter made a contribution. The extras column also proved significant, with 51 extras — including 32 wides — bolstering the total considerably. Hanish Veluru was the sole wicket-taker for the Falcons, returning figures of 1 for 10 from his two overs.

In reply, the Falcons needed 119 to win and started brightly through Jude Alden, who top-scored for his side with a crisp 14 off 13 balls featuring two fours. Arjun Chirunamala was the Falcons' standout performer, striking 17 off just 12 deliveries with a boundary, but his dismissal proved a turning point as the required run rate climbed.

Stanley Cox hit the only six of the match during his knock of 9 off 11 balls, while Harry Waite also contributed 9 from 13 deliveries. However, the Kestrels' bowling attack proved too disciplined in key moments, with seven wickets falling to stall the Falcons' chase.

Havishreddy Basireddy produced an outstanding all-round display, claiming 2 for 16 from his two overs to complement his batting effort. Ridith Kandadi was the most economical of the Kestrels' bowlers, conceding just 5 runs from his two overs while also picking up a wicket. Edward Heath took 1 for 8, Jonathan Turner claimed 1 for 13, and Daniel Gomez chipped in with 1 for 20 as the wickets were shared across five different bowlers.

Lewis Towner also deserves credit for a tidy spell of 0 for 9 from two overs, helping to build pressure during the middle stages of the Falcons' innings. With 44 extras in the second innings compared to the 51 conceded in the first, the Kestrels' improved discipline with the ball ultimately proved the difference as they defended their total with 10 runs to spare.
