Sabres Fall Just Short as Cookham Dean Edge Tight Pairs Contest
Sonning U11 Sabres suffered a narrow four-run defeat at home to Cookham Dean in the BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs North East league on 14th July, as the visitors posted 120 for 5 from their 20 overs before restricting the Sabres to 116 for 5 in reply.
Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker won the toss and elected to field, a decision that initially looked promising as the Sabres' bowling attack applied early pressure. Abubakar Waseem delivered an excellent spell of 1-3 from his single over, while Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 1-5 from his two overs to claim a wicket and keep the scoring rate in check. Mitul Kalidindi was also notably economical, conceding just two runs from his over.
However, the Cookham Dean innings was significantly boosted by extras, with 37 additional runs gifted by the Sabres attack — 29 of which came from wides. Several bowlers found it difficult to maintain their line, with Isaac Hutchinson conceding eight wides and four no-balls in his spell, while George Davies and Stanley Cox also struggled with their accuracy, each conceding eight and six wides respectively. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker went for ten runs from her over, including six wides and two no-balls.
Samuel Smith was the standout performer with the bat for Cookham Dean, striking 13 runs from just 10 balls at the top of the order. Captain Angus Bowler contributed 3 from 16 balls, while Tristan Thorpe also added 3 runs from 7 deliveries. Gethin Cox occupied the crease for 21 balls for his 1 run, absorbing deliveries but helping his side tick along through extras.
The Sabres' reply saw them reach 116 for 5 from their allotted 20 overs. While the detailed batting scorecard for the Sonning innings was not recorded, the chase fell agonisingly close, with the home side finishing just four runs short of the target. In a pairs format where every dismissal costs five runs from the starting total of 200, the five wickets lost by each side proved significant, but ultimately it was the Sabres' inability to overhaul the total that proved decisive.
The margin of defeat underlined how costly the extras conceded during the fielding innings had been. Had the Sabres been able to reduce those 37 extras by even a modest amount, the target would have been well within reach. Daniel Moseley and Alexander Hatchett-Walker both bowled tidily, conceding six and five runs respectively from their overs, but their discipline was undermined by the wides and no-balls elsewhere in the attack.
Cookham Dean will take the full 20 league points from the fixture, while Sonning came away empty-handed despite a competitive showing with the bat. For the Sabres, the lessons from this encounter are clear — tighter bowling discipline could have turned what was a close defeat into a victory.
