Scorchers Fight Back From 40-6 to Claim Stunning Victory Over Aston Rowant

Sonning U11 Scorchers produced a remarkable recovery at Knowl Hill on 24th May, chasing down Aston Rowant's total of 99-4 with five balls to spare after being reduced to 40-6 in their reply. Kabir Nair Bansode's explosive 26 not out off just 14 balls, supported by an unbeaten 18 from Zain Baloch, transformed what had appeared a lost cause into a memorable win in the U11 League Pool 3.

Aston Rowant, having won the toss and elected to bat, built a solid platform through an opening partnership of 31 between captain Zac Holmans (18 off 21 balls) and Finn Catherwood-Smith (10 off 10). The pair struck the ball cleanly from the outset, with Catherwood-Smith particularly aggressive before being caught by Musa Meer off the bowling of Ridith Kandadi.

Archie Reeves continued the momentum with a composed 19 off 25 balls, featuring three boundaries, before retiring not out. A useful third-wicket stand of 23 between Andrew Kershaw and Austin King kept the scoreboard ticking, though Zain Baloch broke through to have Kershaw caught for 6 — impressively pouching his own catch. Austin King proved the most destructive of the Aston Rowant batters, blazing 22 not out from just 14 deliveries, including three fours and a six, to propel the visitors to 99-4 from their 16 overs.

The Scorchers' bowling effort was a collective one, with all eight bowlers used by captain Ranbir Setia. Svarup Huggi was the most economical, conceding just 6 runs from his two overs including a maiden, while Kabir Nair Bansode returned impressive figures of 1-2 from his single over. Baloch (1-9 from two overs with a maiden) and Kandadi (1-10) also contributed key wickets.

The Sonning reply began disastrously. Vivaan Ramesh was run out for a duck with just one run on the board, and Musa Meer followed shortly after, caught off Thomas Reeves for 2 to leave the Scorchers reeling at 4-2. Niko Jordinson battled hard for his 4 off 19 balls but was also run out, and when Alexander Green fell for a well-played 18 off 17 balls — caught off Zac Holmans — the score had only reached 40-4. Two more wickets tumbled without addition: Alexander Hatchett-Walker was caught off Maxwell King for 5, and Lewis Towner departed for a duck, also caught off Holmans. At 40-6, the match appeared to be slipping decisively in Aston Rowant's favour.

Kabir Nair Bansode had other ideas. Striding to the crease at number seven, he launched a breathtaking counter-attack, crashing five boundaries in a blistering innings of 26 from 14 balls. Zain Baloch matched his partner's aggression with a composed 18 not out off 17 deliveries, the pair adding 60 runs in a match-turning stand that swung the contest entirely. Nair Bansode retired not out having reached the retirement threshold, but by then the damage had been done — Aston Rowant's bowlers had been put to the sword.

Ridith Kandadi arrived to finish the job in style, smashing a boundary in a quick-fire 5 not out as the Scorchers reached their target of 100 in the second ball of the 16th over. Maxwell King bore the brunt of the assault, conceding 27 runs from his three overs, while Finn Isaac went for 17 from two. It was a victory that demonstrated the depth of character in this young Sonning side, turning certain defeat into triumph through sheer fearlessness with the bat.
