Match Report
Sharks Cruise to Victory at Shiplake as Bowling Attack Dismantles Henley
Sonning U13 Sharks posted a commanding 148 for 7 from their 20 overs before bowling Henley out for 90 to secure a convincing victory in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge at Shiplake College on Sunday.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Sharks endured a shaky start as opener Henry Bright was run out by Alastair Taylor for just 1 off a single delivery. Tejus Maddi followed shortly after for 4, and when Ishan Jithendriya was bowled by Jasper Day for 11, Sonning found themselves 33 for 3 with work to do. The early wickets threatened to derail the innings, but the middle and lower order had other ideas.
Wicketkeeper Namit Desai anchored the innings with an unbeaten 19 from 26 balls, threading three boundaries through the field and providing the stability the Sharks desperately needed. His 22-run partnership with Santhosh Murugaraj for the fourth wicket steadied the ship, and though captain Idris Malik fell for a duck and Daniel Moseley departed for 9, Desai remained a constant presence at the crease throughout. Henley's bowlers struggled badly for accuracy, conceding a remarkable 62 extras — including 38 wides — which gifted Sonning nearly half their total without requiring a shot to be played.
The partnership that truly put the match beyond Henley's reach came between Elijah Patel and Finn Reid. The pair added 51 for the seventh wicket, with Patel contributing a composed 16 from 25 balls before retiring not out and Reid striking three fours in his 14 off 20 deliveries. Suvir Jaryal added a brisk unbeaten 8 from 9 balls at the end as the Sharks closed on a formidable 148.
Henley's reply never gained any momentum thanks to a devastating opening spell from Suvir Jaryal. The right-armer's figures of 2 for 2 from two overs, including a maiden, set the tone immediately as he removed Louis Ball for a duck and then dismissed Jackson McDavid for 5 to leave the hosts reeling. Daniel Moseley continued the assault with the ball, taking 2 for 18 including the key wicket of captain James Gibbons, caught by Desai for 2, and Harry Ellison, bowled for 5. At 27 for 5, Henley's task was already monumental.
Yani Stamoulis and Alastair Taylor mounted the only meaningful resistance of the innings, putting on 54 for the sixth wicket. Taylor was the standout performer for Henley, striking six fours in an aggressive unbeaten 28 from 20 balls, while Stamoulis contributed a patient 11 from 22 deliveries. Their partnership briefly raised Henley hopes, but once Santhosh Murugaraj bowled Stamoulis and followed up by removing Rufus Clayton for a duck in the same over, the lower order crumbled.
Finn Reid sealed the victory with a superb final over, claiming 2 for 3 from his single over as he bowled Jasper Day for 1 and Cassian Cartland for 2. Idris Malik also chipped in with the important wicket of Jonah Withers, finishing with tidy figures of 1 for 5 from his two overs. Henley were bowled out for 90 in just 14 overs, handing the Sharks a comprehensive 58-run victory and a full 20 league points.
The wickets were shared impressively across the Sonning attack, with six different bowlers claiming at least one scalp. It was a complete team performance from the Sharks, who overcame early batting difficulties to post a total that was always well beyond Henley's reach on the day.
