Sonning 3rd XI Frustrated by Abandonment After Taylor's Four-Wicket Haul Restricts Checkendon

Sonning 3rd XI's Division 8B clash away at Checkendon Cricket Club on 30th August ended in abandonment, denying captain Arun Kumar Pera's side the chance to chase down 225 after a disciplined second-half bowling performance had pegged back the hosts.

Having won the toss and opted to field, Sonning found themselves under early pressure as Checkendon's opening pair of Vishal Gupta and Karan Sheth put on a brisk 74-run stand for the first wicket. Gupta struck four fours and a six in a fluent 30 from 33 balls before Aashmit Ghosh broke through, bowling him to give Sonning their first breakthrough.

Sheth, however, proved immovable throughout the innings. The number two batsman compiled a magnificent unbeaten 116 from 96 deliveries, lacing 15 boundaries and clearing the rope twice in a commanding display. He anchored the Checkendon innings from start to finish, reaching his half-century during a 27-run second-wicket partnership with Praveen Bharadwaj and never looking troubled despite wickets falling at the other end.

The turning point in the fielding innings came when Sam Taylor was introduced into the attack. The Sonning seamer produced a superb spell of 4-24 from eight overs, including a maiden, systematically dismantling the Checkendon middle order. Taylor trapped both Bharadwaj (7) and Sudhir Kothem (0) lbw in quick succession, reducing Checkendon from 101 for one to 105 for three. He then had Harish Reddy Bakka caught by Ghosh for 11 and bowled Taruni Dhara Rao Gandham for 6, leaving the hosts wobbling at 146 for five.

Hassan Shah provided useful support at the other end, claiming 2-40 from seven overs. He bowled Rishabh Singh for 22 to end a dangerous 58-run sixth-wicket stand with Sheth, then removed Rohan Babuta for a duck in his next over. A sharp piece of fielding from Aseem Shafi accounted for Kunal Mendiratta via run out, leaving Checkendon eight down.

Late hitting from Viral Khamar, who struck an unbeaten 8 from just four balls, helped Checkendon to 224 for eight from their 35 overs. The innings included 23 extras, with eight wides and five no-balls contributing to Sonning's occasionally wayward early spells — Jack Durrant conceded five wides in his opening five-over burst, while Asad Imam went for 44 from his five overs as the Checkendon openers capitalised on anything short.

Sonning never had the opportunity to mount their reply. The match was abandoned before the second innings could begin, with both sides sharing seven points apiece. It was a particularly frustrating outcome for Taylor, whose outstanding bowling figures deserved the chance to be backed up by his side's batting line-up.
