Sonning U11 Spartans claimed a hard-fought victory over Cookham Dean at Knowl Hill CC on 3rd July, chasing down 108 to win by just three runs in a tense BYCL Under 11 Challenge encounter. Captain Svarup Huggi's decision to field first after winning the toss proved decisive, as the Spartans' bowlers restricted the hosts before a late flourish with the bat secured the points.

Cookham Dean's innings was built around several useful contributions rather than one dominant knock. Finn McCue was the most fluent of the home side's batters, striking three fours in a brisk 14 from just eight deliveries, while Charlie Fardon (12 off 11, three fours) and captain Rufus Snellgrove (12 off 14, two fours) also provided impetus. Hal Marriott chipped in with 10 from 10 balls lower down the order.

The Spartans' bowling attack shared the wickets impressively across nine bowlers, with every member of the side getting a turn. Jacob Garner was the pick of the attack, claiming three wickets from his two overs for just 10 runs, while Chloe Dawes produced the most economical spell of the match — a superb 2-2 from two overs including a maiden, keeping the Cookham Dean batters firmly in check. Isabella Partridge and Viaan Choudermet each collected two wickets apiece, and Muhammad Abdurrahman Baig and Rudransh Singh took one each as Cookham Dean were pegged back to 107 for 14 from their 20 overs, with 35 extras contributing significantly to the total.

The Spartans' chase began cautiously as the top order found runs hard to come by against disciplined Cookham Dean bowling. Chloe Dawes (3 off 15), Isabella Partridge (4 off 9), Harrison Kidd (5 off 14), and Huggi (5 off 10) all made modest contributions, but the scoreboard was ticking along slowly and wickets were falling at regular intervals. Hal Marriott bowled tightly for the hosts, conceding just one run from his two overs while taking a wicket, and Owen Jones claimed three wickets to keep Cookham Dean firmly in the contest.

The match turned dramatically when Jonathan Turner strode to the crease at number nine. The wicketkeeper played the innings of the match, blazing 20 runs from just 12 balls including a boundary to inject urgency into the chase when it was most needed. Turner's counterattacking knock shifted the momentum decisively in Sonning's favour and put the target firmly within reach.

Jacob Garner, following up his excellent bowling spell, contributed a valuable 10 from 13 balls with two fours to complement Turner's assault. Viaan Choudermet had earlier played an important hand in the middle order with 12 off 16 deliveries, hitting two fours in the most substantial contribution from the top six. The 42 extras conceded by Cookham Dean — including 16 wides and 15 no-balls — also proved costly for the hosts and ultimately provided the margin of victory.

George Tate gave Cookham Dean hope with a four-wicket haul from his two overs, but his 16 runs conceded meant the damage was already done.
