Twin Half-Centuries from Akula and Suriarachchi Power U15 Scorchers to Comfortable Victory

Sonning U15 Scorchers chased down Reading's total of 134 with 21 balls to spare at King George's Field on Wednesday evening, driven by identical unbeaten half-centuries from Kishan Akula and captain Kanishka Suriarachchi in a BYCL Under 15 T20 Blast West fixture.

Having won the toss and inserted Reading, Sonning's bowlers kept things relatively tight despite conceding 28 extras across the innings. Tom Wolfenden struck early, bowling Sparsh Gupta for 27 off just 11 balls after the opener had threatened to take the game away from the hosts with an aggressive cameo. George Rothermel then trapped Reading skipper Srishaa Ganagabalan lbw for a duck shortly afterwards, leaving the visitors 36 for 2 and in need of rebuilding.

Atharv Agarwal top-scored in Reading's innings with 29 off 43 balls, hitting nine fours and a six before retiring not out, while Dheeran Gounder provided the anchor with an unbeaten 32 off 40 deliveries. Arav Yaduvanshi contributed a handy 18 not out as Reading posted 134 for 2 from their 20 overs. Sonning used ten bowlers in the innings, with Wolfenden (2-0-9-1) and Rothermel (2-0-10-1) proving the most effective, while Reyansh Setia's tidy three overs for just 12 runs stood out in a disciplined spell.

The Scorchers' reply was utterly dominated by the opening partnership between Akula and Suriarachchi. The pair put on a magnificent 121 for the first wicket, taking the game away from Reading with a blend of crisp stroke play and intelligent running. Akula was the more prolific boundary hitter of the two, striking nine fours in his 50 off 47 balls, while Suriarachchi mixed power with finesse, clearing the ropes twice and finding the boundary four times in reaching his own half-century off 46 deliveries.

Both batsmen retired not out on 50, having done the bulk of the work in the chase. George Rothermel fell for a first-ball duck, bowled by Sparsh Gupta, but by that stage the match was already well beyond Reading's reach at 121 for 1.

Reading's bowling attack struggled for control throughout, conceding 27 extras including 16 wides. Saee Chatap was particularly wayward, sending down eight wides in three overs that cost 25 runs, while Dheeran Gounder went for 30 off his three overs as Sonning's batsmen found scoring easy. Shreyas Koppole and Jack Durrant saw the Scorchers home with quick-fire contributions of 5 apiece, sealing a nine-wicket victory in the 17th over.

The win earned Sonning the full 20 league points, while Reading took away five bonus batting points as consolation from a match in which their bowlers were unable to contain the Scorchers' top order.
