Match Report

Sonning Women Fall 19 Runs Short Against Wargrave at King George's Field

Sonning Women's 1st XI were unable to chase down Wargrave's total of 122 for 2 in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture on Sunday, finishing on 103 for 5 despite a battling effort from the middle and lower order. Captain Michaela Herrett won the toss and opted to field, but Wargrave's batting lineup proved too consistent across their pairs to contain.

Wargrave's innings was built on contributions throughout the order. Srishaa Ganagabalan top-scored with 22 off 16 balls, while Allison Holloway struck a rapid 20 from just 8 deliveries to give the visitors real impetus. Laanya Rupasinha set the tone at the top with 16 off 8 balls, and Diya Palanikumar added 19 off 16 as Wargrave accumulated runs at a healthy rate. The only Sonning bowler to claim wickets was Geethika Jyothis, who took 2 for 35 from her four overs, dismissing Sophie Hucker and Zara Butt. Extras also proved costly, with 18 additional runs conceded including 12 wides.

Sonning's reply started steadily, with opener Elinor Longridge making 7 off 10 balls before retiring, while captain Herrett managed 6 from 14 before being dismissed. The run rate was already behind the required pace when Chloe Bailey came to the crease and produced the most fluent innings of Sonning's batting effort, striking 17 off 16 deliveries to keep the chase alive.

The middle order struggled to maintain momentum. Anneli Page fell for just 3 off 8 balls, and while Sarah Wonham contributed a useful 12 from 15 deliveries, a cluster of wickets in the middle overs left Sonning with too much to do. Liz Rhodes added 6 off 8 before being dismissed, with the required rate climbing steadily.

Geethika Jyothis produced an encouraging cameo lower down, hitting 15 off 13 balls to add some respectability to the scorecard, but Rebecca Malhi could manage only 5 from 11 before falling as the fifth wicket. Sonning's total of 103 included a significant 32 extras — featuring 8 wides and 12 no-balls from the Wargrave attack — but ultimately the batters could not convert that generosity into a winning total.

Wargrave's bowling was shared effectively across four bowlers. Srishaa Ganagabalan was the most penetrative, claiming 2 for 27 from her four overs, while Laanya Rupasinha, Diya Palanikumar, and Zara Butt each chipped in with a wicket apiece. Despite conceding 32 extras between them, Wargrave's bowlers maintained enough discipline to restrict Sonning's scoring from the bat to just 71 runs.

The 19-run defeat leaves Sonning with a single league point from the fixture, while Wargrave collected six points to strengthen their position in the group. For Sonning, the performances of Bailey, Wonham, and Jyothis with the bat, along with Jyothis's two wickets, offered encouragement, but the inability to build sustained partnerships against a disciplined Wargrave outfit proved the decisive factor.
