Nower's Unbeaten Century Sinks Sonning as Binfield Chase Down 160 with Ease

Sonning's Sunday 1s were undone by a magnificent unbeaten century from Binfield captain Thomas Nower, who steered his side to a comfortable seven-wicket victory in this friendly fixture at King George's Field on 31 August.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning found themselves in early difficulty as captain Richard Skeil, promoted to open, was caught by Nower off Jishnu Grandhi for 7 with the score on 25. Kishan Akula's stay at number three was brief, caught by Abinandan Venkatraman off Charlie Miles for just 3, and at 35 for 2, Sonning needed a significant contribution from somewhere in the middle order.

Neil Jasti provided exactly that, anchoring the innings with a patient and determined knock of 56 from 94 deliveries. His most productive partnership came alongside Christopher Dowse, with the pair adding 36 for the third wicket before Dowse was caught by Oliver Bryant off the impressive Peter Henly for 16. Henly was the pick of the Binfield attack, returning outstanding figures of 2-15 from his eight overs, including two maidens, and his dismissal of Jasti — bowled for 56 with the score on 113 — proved the pivotal moment of the innings.

Aashmit Ghosh provided useful lower-order resistance with 23 from 41 balls, sharing a stand of 28 with Jasti for the fifth wicket before adding a further 24 with Joseph Dowse for the sixth. However, Jaden Slaughter's introduction proved devastating, claiming 2-8 from just two overs as the innings stuttered. Ghosh was bowled and Maurits Butterworth caught for a first-ball duck in quick succession, reducing Sonning to 137 for 7. A late cameo from wicketkeeper Moksha Suriarachchi, who struck three fours in an unbeaten 16 from nine balls, helped Sonning to a final total of 159 for 8 from their 40 overs.

The target of 160 never looked likely to trouble Binfield once Nower got into his stride. He and Venkatraman put on 53 for the opening wicket before Jasti made the breakthrough, bowling Venkatraman for 19. Joshua Snelling struggled to score freely at number three, managing just 7 from 33 balls, but Nower continued to find the boundary with regularity at the other end. Daniel Bailey eventually had Snelling caught by Christopher Dowse with the score on 102, but Binfield were well ahead of the required rate.

Nower was imperious throughout, reaching his century from 98 balls, an innings peppered with 15 fours. He dominated every partnership, contributing 32 of the 53-run opening stand, 61 of the 49-run second-wicket partnership, and 18 of the 35 added for the third wicket. Kishan Akula claimed the final scalp, bowling Oliver Bryant for 11, but by then the result was beyond doubt.

Binfield reached their target of 162 for the loss of just three wickets in 30.3 overs, with Nower finishing on a superb unbeaten 102. For Sonning, Jasti's all-round contribution of 56 with the bat and 1-20 with the ball was the standout individual effort, while Ghosh's tidy spell of 4-1-14-0 offered the most economical bowling figures of the day. Ultimately, however, Sonning simply had no answer to Nower's sustained brilliance.
