Match Report

Stingers Secure Cup Victory Despite West Ilsley's Late Surge

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball progressed in the WSB Cup with a hard-fought victory over West Ilsley at King George's Field on Tuesday evening, though the visitors made them work for every run in a contest that proved closer than anticipated.

West Ilsley captain Francesca Wilson won the toss and opted to field, a decision that initially appeared sound as her bowlers kept the Stingers in check during the early overs. Opener Melissa Pengraeve provided the most fluent batting of the Sonning innings, striking 15 off just 15 balls, including two boundaries, to give her side early momentum. Her opening partner Anneli Page contributed a useful 7 from 9 deliveries before the middle order found scoring rather more difficult.

Captain Katie Barrows managed just 3 from 15 balls, while Hannah Brooks was scoreless from her 9 deliveries, leaving the Stingers in need of a late-innings boost. It duly arrived from the lower order, as Michaela Herrett and Rebecca Malhi both struck 11 apiece, their enterprising batting helping to push the total to 87 for no wicket from 16 overs. A significant 32 extras, including 16 wides and 14 no-balls, supplemented the Sonning score, with Zoe Allen's two overs proving particularly costly, conceding 15 runs alongside 6 wides and 8 no-balls. Annabelle Hudson was the pick of the West Ilsley bowling, her tidy two overs yielding just 3 runs.

The Stingers' bowling attack then set about defending their total with considerable vigour. Michaela Herrett, fresh from her batting contribution, proved the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 wickets from her 3 overs for 14 runs. Melissa Pengraeve was equally effective in a shorter spell, also taking 2 for 11 from her 2 overs, while Rebecca Malhi chipped in with a wicket of her own, finishing with 1 for 16 from 3 overs.

West Ilsley's batters struggled to build meaningful partnerships, with 9 wickets falling across the innings — each dismissal carrying a 5-run penalty that significantly hampered their chase. Gemma Chandler was dismissed twice and Helen Keevil three times, their combined tally of five dismissals proving particularly damaging to the visitors' cause. Nicole Allen top-scored for West Ilsley with 11 from 17 balls, while Zoe Allen contributed 9 from 15 in a battling effort at number six.

Despite the regular wickets, West Ilsley's total actually surpassed Sonning's runs scored, reaching 92 from their 16 overs. However, the extraordinary 47 extras conceded by the Stingers' bowling — including 35 wides — masked what was ultimately a decisive advantage gained through the dismissal penalties. The pairs format's scoring system meant that despite out-scoring the Stingers in raw runs, West Ilsley's frequent losses of wicket proved their undoing.

The result sees the Stingers advance in the WSB Cup, with Herrett's all-round display of 11 runs and 2 wickets earning her the standout performance of the evening. Seven Sonning bowlers were used during the West Ilsley innings, demonstrating captain Barrows' willingness to rotate her attack and keep the opposition guessing throughout.
