Sabres Secure Victory at Binfield Behind Strong Bowling Display

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to the FWE Goates Memorial Ground on 28th July and returned with a well-deserved victory against Binfield in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) East, earning a full 20 league points in the process.

Binfield won the toss and elected to field, sending the Sabres in to bat first in this pairs format fixture. Captain Lewis Towner's side made solid use of their time at the crease, posting 109 runs from their innings while losing five wickets. With individual batting figures unavailable, it was a collective effort from the Sonning batters, who rotated through the order with Tanav Shanmugam and Rudransh Singh opening proceedings.

Binfield's reply saw them reach 126 for 8 from their 20 overs, but under the pairs cricket format — where teams start with 200 runs and lose five for each dismissal — those eight wickets proved costly. The 40-run penalty from dismissals meant that despite outscoring Sonning in raw runs, Binfield's adjusted total fell short, handing the Sabres the win.

The bowling effort from Sonning was impressively shared across nine bowlers, ensuring every member of the squad contributed. Bhuvik Rao Mane Prakashrao Santhoshrao led the attack with figures of 2-16 from three overs, his two wickets providing crucial breakthroughs. Jacob Garner also bowled three overs, claiming one wicket for nine runs off the bat, though 10 wides added to his overall cost. Niko Jordinson chipped in with 1-3 from two tidy overs to round off the wicket-takers.

Monish Karthik Saimpu was particularly economical, conceding just three runs from two overs, while Rudransh Singh returned figures of 0-4 from his two overs. Tanav Shanmugam bowled with good control for his 0-7 from two overs, and Chloe Dawes kept things tight with 0-6 from her spell.

Kit was the standout performer for Binfield with the bat, top-scoring with 21 runs, while Archie contributed 11 and Harry added 10. Captain George Wiggett managed five runs but was dismissed twice, as were Owen Paterson, and those repeated dismissals ultimately proved the difference between the two sides.

The victory was built on disciplined bowling and smart cricket from the Sabres, who restricted Binfield's scoring while regularly taking wickets to apply the pairs format penalty. It was a fine team effort under Towner's captaincy, with all nine bowlers used playing their part in securing the result.
