Sabres Fall Short as Extras and Tight Bowling Prove Decisive at White Waltham
Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to White Waltham on 30 June for a BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league fixture and were left to rue a costly first-innings bowling display, ultimately going down by 51 runs in a match that slipped away during the opening passage of play.
White Waltham won the toss and elected to bat, posting a formidable 132 for 6 from their 20 overs. While the home side's batters contributed solidly — Charlotte Hawkins top-scoring with 20 off 26 balls including two fours, Alex Shuttleworth striking a brisk 15 off 13 with three boundaries, and Freddie Murray adding a useful 12 off 11 — it was the extras column that truly inflated the total. A staggering 56 extras, including 40 wides and 16 no-balls, effectively gifted White Waltham more than 40 per cent of their total without the bat needing to make contact.
Jude Alden was the standout performer with the ball for the Sabres, returning figures of 2 for 12 from his three overs, despite conceding four wides. Abubakar Waseem (1-21), captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker (1-20 from four overs) and Sebastian Cook (1-16) each claimed a wicket apiece, but the discipline required to contain the scoring was undermined by loose deliveries across the attack. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker's four overs cost 27, with 12 wides and two no-balls, while Haaniyah Ahmed conceded 12 from just two overs with six wides and four no-balls.
Chasing 133, the Sabres never managed to build the momentum needed and were bowled out for 81 in their 20 overs, losing seven wickets along the way. White Waltham's bowling attack proved far more disciplined, sharing the overs among nine bowlers and applying consistent pressure throughout the innings.
Eleanor Hatchett-Walker offered resistance at the top, compiling 12 off 26 balls with a boundary, while Jude Alden continued his fine all-round afternoon with 11 off 14, including a four. Sebastian Cook contributed a steady 10 off 18 deliveries, and captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker got the innings off to a positive start with 9 off 10 before falling. Anay Goswami showed attacking intent with 6 off just 6 balls, finding the boundary once.
The middle overs proved particularly damaging for Sonning. Abubakar Waseem and Isaac Hutchinson both failed to trouble the scorers, each managing 0 from 12 balls, and the lack of runs from that pairing effectively stalled any chase. Martha Roche was the pick of the White Waltham bowlers, taking 2 for 6 from three economical overs, while Charlotte Hawkins (1-6) and Freddie Cook (1-6) also chipped in with wickets. Freddie Murray bowled with impressive control, conceding just 7 runs from three overs including a maiden.
The 51-run defeat leaves the Sabres with plenty to work on, particularly in terms of bowling discipline. The 56 extras conceded in the first innings made an already challenging task near impossible, and the batting unit will need to find greater consistency through the middle order if they are to compete in future league fixtures.
