Sonning's 274 Not Enough as Hartley Wintney Openers Deliver Devastating Twin Centuries

Sonning Sunday 1s posted an imposing 274 all out at King George's Field on 12 July, only to watch Hartley Wintney chase the target down with remarkable ease, reaching 278 for 2 in just 29.2 overs to claim victory in this friendly fixture.

Captain Richard Skeil won the toss and chose to bat, but his own stay at the crease was brief. Opening the innings, he struck three boundaries in a brisk 15 from 15 balls before being caught by John Chase off the bowling of Graham Selden with the score on just 15. What followed, however, was the innings' defining partnership. Waqas Tahir and Robert Jones combined for a magnificent second-wicket stand of 110, with Jones particularly aggressive in smashing 62 from just 41 deliveries, his innings laced with 13 fours. The partnership was broken when Jones was caught off Ali Jalil, and the very next ball Daniel Longridge departed for a golden duck, caught off Jalil to leave Sonning 125 for 3.

Jalil proved the nemesis of the Sonning middle order, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 29 from his eight overs, including two maidens. He removed Rahul Sood for 4 and wicketkeeper Bharat Rathod for 2 in quick succession, triggering a collapse that saw Sonning slump from 125 for 2 to 144 for 5. Tahir battled on valiantly, adding 45 for the sixth wicket with Mohit Karangad before eventually falling bowled by Eddie Pack for a superb 73, an innings featuring 12 fours and two sixes from 72 balls.

Pack made a decisive intervention with the ball, claiming 3 for 35 from five overs, including the key scalp of Tahir and Christopher Dowse for a duck in the same passage of play, leaving Sonning 189 for 7. Edward Duvall provided vital late impetus with an unbeaten 32 from 27 balls, including two sixes, while Alastair Parkes contributed a rapid 27 from 15 deliveries. Their ninth-wicket partnership of 38 pushed the total past 270 before Parkes was run out and Arthur Parkes was caught off Selden to end the innings.

Any confidence Sonning held at the interval evaporated within minutes of the Hartley Wintney reply. Zishan Hussain and Malik Abbas launched an extraordinary assault on the bowling, putting on an opening stand that yielded runs at a staggering rate. Hussain hammered 104 from just 56 balls, cracking ten fours and eight sixes, while Abbas matched him run for run with 104 of his own from 67 deliveries, clearing the rope nine times and finding the boundary on eight further occasions. The pair effectively ended the contest as a competition long before either retired not out.

Sonning used seven bowlers in a desperate bid to find a breakthrough, but none could separate the openers. Daniel Longridge was the most economical of the main bowlers, conceding 55 from his eight overs, while Robert Jones went for 56 from five and Alastair Parkes leaked 46 from just three. Mohit Karangad offered the only consolation, bowling Eddie Pack and Sam Codd in quick succession to finish with 2 for 19, but by then the first-wicket partnership had already realised 263 runs and the damage was irreparable.

Ali Jalil added an unbeaten 26 and John Chase struck a quick 8 not out as Hartley Wintney reached their target with eight wickets in hand, completing a comprehensive victory that underlined the sheer quality of their top-order batting. For Sonning, a total of 274 that had seemed highly competitive was rendered utterly insufficient by two breathtaking individual performances.
