Stingers Fall Short as Emmbrook & Bearwood Claim Victory at King George's Field
Sonning U11 Stingers suffered defeat at home on 19th May as Emmbrook & Bearwood overhauled their total in this BYCL Girls U11 Challenge fixture at King George's Field. After being asked to bat first following the toss, the Stingers posted 82 for 5 from their 16 overs, a total that proved insufficient as the visitors reached 107 for 8 in reply.
Aarohi Tyagi provided the Stingers with an enterprising start at the top of the order, striking 15 runs from just 13 balls, including two boundaries, to give the home side early momentum. Jessica Hawkins continued the positive approach from number three, contributing 12 off 14 deliveries with two fours of her own, offering the most fluent batting of the Sonning innings alongside Tyagi.
Contributions came from across the middle order, with Chloe Dawes adding 6, captain Megan Symes making a brisk 5 from 5 balls, and Ruby Cross grinding out 5 from 19 deliveries. A total of 74 extras — including 40 penalty runs, 22 wides, and 10 no-balls — significantly bolstered the Stingers' scorecard, though ultimately the 82 on the board would not prove enough.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's bowling was led by the impressive Ella Regent, who delivered a miserly spell of 2-0-1-0, including a maiden, to apply pressure through the middle overs. Lottie Eley was equally disciplined, conceding just 5 runs from her two overs while also bowling a maiden. Isobel Lynch and Isla Collins-Lindsay claimed a wicket apiece, with Lynch's two overs proving costly at 16 runs but yielding a crucial breakthrough.
In reply, Emmbrook & Bearwood found runs more readily, with Ella Regent the standout performer, smashing 19 off 13 balls with two fours to anchor the chase. Edith Miles chipped in with a valuable 14 from 14 deliveries, while Isobel Lynch contributed 10 off 11 balls. The visitors' total was also supplemented by 68 extras, including 28 no-balls and 25 penalty runs, which eased their path to the target.
Jessica Hawkins was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, delivering a superb spell of 2-0-6-3 to give the Stingers hope during the second innings. Captain Megan Symes supported well with figures of 2-0-6-1, while Chloe Dawes and Aarohi Tyagi each claimed a wicket apiece. Tyagi's two overs yielded two wickets for 11 runs, continuing her impressive all-round contribution to the match.
Despite the Stingers' efforts in the field — taking eight wickets across the innings — the damage was done through extras, particularly no-balls, with Inaya Ali's two overs alone conceding 14 no-balls. The bowling unit will look to tighten their discipline as the additional runs proved decisive, with Emmbrook & Bearwood reaching their target with 25 runs to spare. Hawkins' outstanding all-round display of 12 runs and three wickets was the clear highlight for Sonning on a day when the visitors proved too strong.
