Spartans Edge Past Cookham Dean in Nail-Biting Five-Run Victory

Sonning U13 Spartans secured a hard-fought five-run victory over Cookham Dean at Ricketts Field on 23 August, defending their total of 128 in a league contest that went down to the wire in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge.

Captain Anay Patel won the toss and elected to bat, and after a steady opening stand of 20 between Archie Jansen (8 off 14) and Jude Alden (10 off 14), it was Izaan Baloch who seized control of the Spartans innings. Baloch played with real authority, striking seven fours in a fluent 31 off just 24 balls before retiring not out — the standout knock of the innings. His partnership with Heet Panchal was pivotal, the pair adding 54 for the third wicket to push the score from 29-2 to 83-3 and provide the backbone the innings needed.

When Panchal fell bowled by Samuel Smith for 10 and captain Patel was run out for 3, the Spartans found themselves wobbling at 87-5. Divik Gupta departed without scoring in the same passage of play, and suddenly the momentum had shifted firmly in Cookham Dean's favour. Aarib Ansari steadied the ship with a composed 12 off 15 balls, but it was Tavish Malik who injected late impetus with a quickfire 14 off just eight deliveries, including two fours and a six, as the pair added 24 for the sixth wicket to push the total beyond 110. The Spartans closed on 128-7 from their 20 overs, with 39 extras — including 19 wides and 12 no-balls — significantly boosting their total.

Cookham Dean's reply started positively enough, with Siddhant Jayashekhar looking ominous from the outset. He would finish unbeaten on 37 off 20 balls, lacing six fours in what was comfortably the best individual innings of the match. However, the Spartans' bowling attack kept chipping away at the other end. Heet Panchal struck first, taking a caught-and-bowled to remove opener Vian Panwar for 8 with the score on 19. Baloch then produced a magnificent spell of 2-6 from his two overs, dismissing captain Teddy Truman (7) and Barney Pateman (3) in quick succession, with wicketkeeper Jansen pouching both catches behind the stumps.

The home side slumped to 56-5 when Aarib Ansari had Evan Jones caught by Tavish Malik for a golden duck and Divik Gupta removed Edward Nye for 2, with Baloch taking the catch. Cookham Dean appeared down and out, but Samuel Smith and Millan Colton had other ideas. The pair put on 49 for the sixth wicket — the largest partnership of the entire match — dragging the hosts back into contention. Smith contributed 18 off 31 balls, providing the anchor, while Colton struck three fours in an aggressive 27 off 28 deliveries.

Just as Cookham Dean appeared to be cruising towards their target, Smith fell run out with the score on 105, and the match tilted back in Sonning's favour. Ethan Cawsey proved decisive in the closing overs, taking 2-10 from his two overs, including the wicket of Charlie Woodward caught by Panchal and Sid Jayashekhar bowled. With wickets tumbling at the other end, Colton was eventually run out as the last man dismissed, and Cookham Dean were bowled out for 123 — five runs short of their target — with Jayashekhar stranded on 37 not out.

The Spartans' bowling effort was a genuine team performance, with all ten bowlers used and wickets shared around. Baloch's outstanding 2-6 was the highlight, while the fielding unit held its nerve when the pressure was at its peak. It was a victory that owed much to disciplined cricket in the crucial moments, particularly when Cookham Dean's lower order threatened to steal the match from under Sonning's noses.
