Ayub's Magnificent 151 Not Enough as Sonning Forced to Settle for Draw Against Marlow

Muhammad Ayub produced a breathtaking innings of 151 from just 126 balls at King George's Field, but Sonning were ultimately left frustrated as Marlow's lower order held firm to secure a draw in this Division 1B encounter on Saturday.

Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be a fine surface, but Sonning found themselves in early trouble. Alex Mcloughlin fell for 4 and Higginbottom himself departed for 13, both caught off the bowling of Toby Pettit, who finished with figures of 3-63 from his 11 overs. At 31 for 2, Sonning needed a partnership, and Mohammed Zahid and Ayub provided exactly that.

The pair put on a commanding third-wicket stand of 132 runs, wresting control of the innings from Marlow's attack. Zahid played the anchor role superbly, compiling 66 from 99 balls with seven boundaries before falling caught behind off Peter Dickenson. His departure brought a brief wobble — Robert Jones was trapped lbw by Pettit for a duck in the very next over, leaving Sonning 164 for 4.

Ayub, however, was in imperious form. Having reached his half-century from 66 balls, he accelerated dramatically in the final phase of the innings. His partnership of 82 with Henry Cook for the sixth wicket proved devastating, with Ayub clearing the ropes nine times in an exhibition of clean hitting. He raced from his century to 150 in just 11 balls, and his eventual dismissal — caught off Dickenson for 151 — came with Sonning's score on 293. Cook contributed an unbeaten 23 from 15 balls, launching three sixes of his own, as Sonning declared on an imposing 300 for 6 from 51 overs.

Marlow's reply began disastrously when Mo Arabi was pinned lbw by Danyal Ghazi for a duck on just the second ball of the innings. Phil Lines and Alex Bovill steadied things with a partnership of 39 before Damario Goodman struck twice in quick succession, removing both batsmen to leave the visitors 44 for 3.

What followed was a remarkable fightback. Jai Angell and Imran Syal combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 130 that threatened to transform the contest. Angell struck eight fours and two sixes in a fluent 60 from 68 deliveries, while Syal accumulated 66 from 89 balls with eleven boundaries. For a period, Marlow's pursuit of 301 appeared feasible, and Sonning needed a breakthrough.

Mohammed Zahid provided it, proving as effective with the ball as he had been with the bat. He removed both set batsmen in quick succession — Angell caught by Ayub and Syal caught shortly after — before trapping Jack Stebbings lbw for nought. The score tumbled from 174 for 3 to 176 for 7 as Goodman also chipped in with the wicket of Ben Ralphs. Zahid's figures of 4-34 from 12 overs were outstanding, while Goodman's miserly spell of 3-42 from 15 overs, including six maidens, kept the pressure relentless.

However, with the required rate climbing beyond reach, Marlow captain Will Bovill dug in, making an unbeaten 12 from 32 balls alongside Peter Dickenson, who survived on 4 not out. The pair saw out the remaining overs to finish on 198 for 8, denying Sonning the victory their dominant first-innings performance had merited. Wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar was busy behind the stumps, taking three catches in the second innings as Sonning claimed 15 points from the match to Marlow's 9.
