Higginbottom's Hat-Trick Not Enough as Sonning Held to a Draw by Reading

Sonning 1st XI were unable to chase down a modest target of 162 at King George's Field on Saturday, finishing on 118 for 8 as Reading earned a draw in this Division 1B encounter.

Reading won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared a decent surface, but found themselves in early difficulty. Danyal Ghazi removed Praful Waghela for 11 to leave the visitors 16 for 1, before opener Shiryar Ahmed and Arjun Srinivasan steadied things with a partnership of 48 for the second wicket. Ahmed contributed 27 from 53 balls with four boundaries before Damario Goodman found his off stump, and Srinivasan went on to top-score with an industrious 42 from 80 deliveries, hitting five fours as he anchored the middle overs.

The game swung dramatically in Sonning's favour when captain Peter Higginbottom produced a remarkable spell of bowling. Having already removed Srinivasan at 90 for 5, Higginbottom then claimed a hat-trick, dismissing Amardeep Dosanjh for 3, Sushan Chapagain for 2, and Adhrit Sharma for a golden duck in quick succession. Reading suddenly found themselves reeling at 90 for 6, and then 101 for 7 as Chapagain departed shortly after.

However, Rishit Pandey and Samarth Manu mounted a stubborn eighth-wicket stand worth 58 runs that dragged Reading back into contention. Pandey struck five fours in his 39 from 69 balls before being caught by David Coutts off Mohammed Zahid's bowling, while Manu remained unbeaten on 18 from 57 deliveries. Reading closed on 161 for 8 from their 52 overs. Higginbottom finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 33 from 13 overs, including four maidens, while Ghazi claimed 2 for 42 and Goodman took 1 for 35 from an economical 15-over spell.

Sonning's reply began promisingly as Dhruv Peshkar and Alex Mcloughlin put on 64 for the opening wicket. Mcloughlin was the more fluent of the pair, striking five fours in his 36 from 66 balls, while Peshkar contributed a patient 26 from 69 deliveries. The partnership brought up the fifty in the 18th over, and at that stage Sonning appeared well placed for the chase.

The complexion of the innings changed entirely when Moin Khowaja was introduced into the attack. The Reading seamer dismissed Mcloughlin and then trapped Mohammed Zahid lbw for a golden duck with his next delivery, leaving Sonning 64 for 2. Muhammad Ayub fell shortly after for 7, caught by Aditya Srinivasan off Praful Waghela, and when Peshkar was bowled by Khowaja at 77 for 4, the hosts were suddenly under pressure. Khowaja finished with excellent figures of 4 for 34 from 11 overs, proving the decisive bowler with the match in the balance.

Amaad Ali offered some resistance with 15 from 51 balls, but wickets continued to tumble at the other end as Waghela and Srinivasan kept things tight. From 100 for 6, Sonning lost two more quick wickets — Gaurav Jayan run out by Khowaja and skipper Higginbottom bowled for 3 — to slip to 106 for 8. The tail-end pair of Danyal Ghazi and Damario Goodman survived the final overs to see out the draw, Goodman hitting a couple of boundaries in a brisk unbeaten 10, but the target of 162 was never seriously threatened again. Reading walked away with the better share of the bonus points, collecting 10 to Sonning's 5 in what proved a frustrating afternoon for the home side.
